Why are kids no longer playing outside?

Have you ever wondered why there seem to be fewer kids who play outside with their peers or friends? If we are to compare it to the previous years or generations, nowadays it is pretty rare to find children who prefer playing outdoors.

We cannot ignore the fact that the number of kids enjoying their childhood playing on the streets is gradually declining. So why would younger people now rather stay indoors than play outdoors?

Technological Advancement

Technological devices are rapidly advancing due to the presence of creative minds of people. Smartphones, laptops, video consoles, and online games are now prevalent in today’s society. Also, they will continue to do so in the foreseeable future.

The discovery of the internet and the introduction of numerous social media websites to the population resulted in a total lifestyle change. Gadgets have become a source of entertainment or a pastime for children. Since it only takes a single click to find something to enjoy, people prefer using their phones instead of physically strenuous activities. Things like sports, exercise, or outdoor games are now slowly becoming a thing of the past.

Aside from technological advancement, another reason why children no longer play outside could be the global pandemic. Health is now the priority in today’s generation, and parents do not want their children to catch a dangerous virus. As a result, adults usually forbid their kids to venture outside to play, not to compromise their safety.

The Risks of Injury or Accidents

It is a known fact that letting your kids play outdoors makes them prone to injuries or different accidents. Since kids mainly use the streets as their own playroom, it exposes them to the risks of getting into unfortunate situations or mishaps. It is not a new occurrence when the media broadcast news about children being caught in accidents while playing. So it is understandable for parents not to let their kids go outside for fear of them risking their safety.

In conclusion, these are just a few known reasons why children now are not playing outside. In addition, knowing these factors and the risks that kids may face as they play on the streets make it reasonable for parents to forbid them from going out. We only want what’s best for our children, and if letting them play on the streets may compromise their safety, then it may be better to make them play indoors instead.

There are numerous games or ways to still enjoy with kids without using the internet or electronic devices. As long as they enjoy themselves and are safe, that is more than enough for parents to be assured and complacent.
