Christmas Will Never be the Same Anymore

Nothing screams ber months than waking up in the middle of the night because you felt a little chill in the air. At this point, you will also need to dig up your sweatshirts and pajamas from the baul where you kept them hidden for a year. More than anything, the start of the ber months also signals the hundred-day celebration of Christmas.

In the Philippines, when September ushers in, it is automatically Christmas already. But during these past few years, I cannot ignore the fact that Christmas is just not the same anymore. Why did I say so? Here is why.

Children Nowadays are too Smart to Believe in Santa

Since the world is changing and being more advanced, especially in technology, the delights of the kids these days heavily rely on digital content. Before, as kids, we will die just to be Darna or Amihan or Marimar in a sagala. But the kids these days, they are more familiar with Peppa Pig and Cocomelon than in our own ABaKaDa.

Do not get me wrong, sis. I am absolutely not against it. However, as I see it, the way that the children are brought up now slightly denies them the opportunity to experience certain traditions. For instance, fewer kids are now playing out on the streets, lesser caroling during the Christmas season, and even pamamasko is becoming a rare tradition!

People are Being More Practical

I think this one should be practiced more on a daily basis and not just during holidays. Since more Filipinos are now careful about how they spend their money, we do not really see the sense of Christmas decorations as early as September.

Therefore, Christmas does not feel the same anymore because we celebrate it shorter than what we are used to. Lately, we also use more tipid hacks. Thus, Christmas is not as festive as before. Who can blame us in this state of the economy, right?

The World is too Old for Christmas

Along with being practical, we are also realists now. More and more millennials and Gen Zs seem to be more faithful than religious. It is important to note that there is a difference between the two. Religion adheres to a set of rules, while faith ties us to a cause. Since our world is an ever-maturing place, religions and beliefs are now spotting left and right. Therefore, it is inevitable that some people will not believe in Christmas anymore in terms of the religious aspects of it.

We Think about Ourselves More Now

In my opinion, this is the main reason why Christmas will never be the same anymore. Since we are now aware of how essential mental health stability is, we cut ties with things that are unhealthy for us. This includes habits, hobbies, lifestyle, and even relationships. Some would think that this is too extreme; but if you ask me, I do not see it as a bad thing. As humans, we need to realize that ourselves is more important than a centuries-old holiday!

I know that some people may disagree when I say that Christmas will never be the same anymore. But, think about this: it is not about the holiday. It is about why and who you celebrate it with. Because sis, at the end of the day, those are the only things that actually matter, right?
