Charles & Keith proved that crises could become opportunities as it hailed the Filipina teen formerly bashed for calling them “luxury” as its new community brand ambassador.

In January this year, the Singapore-based content creator Zoe Gabriel funneled her way into local and international headlines. Through her social media page, she happily shared that she is buying her first-ever “luxury” item, a bag from Charles & Keith.

Howbeit, controversy marred what was supposed to be the celebration of the 17-year-old’s milestone. Some netizens belittled Gabriel’s small accomplishment, arguing Charles & Keith is not a high-end brand.

As a result, the event sparked debate from various users online. Most sided with Gabriel while promoting the idea that luxury is subjective. Hence, correcting her was unneeded.

On the other hand, the founders of Charles & Keith later invited Gabriel and her father for lunch. In a statement, the executives said they admired the young woman’s humility and grace in handling the situation, which reflected their principles.

Months after the issue, Charles & Keith named Zoe Gabriel the new face of the brand.

On Saturday, Charles & Keith took to Instagram to relaunch a new version of an item from its previous collection. In particular, the post unveiled the purple edition of its Alia chain-strap crossbody bag while introducing Gabriel among its community brand ambassadors.

According to the caption, the special iteration is a gesture in support of the UN Women’s Storytelling for Gender Equality program. The brand also wishes to join the global movement and celebration of International Women’s Day 2023.

Meanwhile, Gabriel shared a note of her advocacy to empower women. In her message, she said that women are like flowers. Despite being diverse and bold in differences, everyone is beautiful in their own way.

“This International Women’s Day, let us celebrate with compassion. Let us celebrate equality through equity— the way flowers do,” she ended.
