Five LGBTQIA+ Must-Read Webtoons

You may be looking for LGBTQIA+ comics that are not your typical boys’ love or girls’ love. Maybe LGBTQIA+ comics that are more than just two characters falling in love. Internal struggles? Individual experiences? Representation for the lesser-known letters within the LGBTQIA+ community? Webtoon has your back!

Five LGBTQIA+ Must-Read Webtoons

Here are 5 Webtoon comics that feature LGBTQIA+ characters with most of them created by artists who are part of the community as well!

The Doctors Are Out

A romance comic by Filipino artist, Blau. It is your typical “enemies to friends to lovers” story. However, how many “enemies to lovers” stories have you read that involve family drama, side characters having relationships, and self-discovery after a traumatic past?

What I like about this comic is how well incorporated the characters are. The focus is not kept only on the main characters but on other characters as well as their interactions with one another. It feels like watching their lives progress in this small Philippine town instead of just reading about the love life of two individuals.

The beloved Dr. Matias Guevara tends to his patients in his little neighborhood health clinic, unaware that Dr. Fernando Guevera opened his new veterinary clinic right next door! With their patients confused and their tolerance running thin, the two grown men constantly bicker and compete! Will their similar names and professions cause their rivalry to go untreated, or will they heal each other’s broken hearts?!

Life Outside The Circle

This is a drama comic by H-P Lehkonen, a trans-feminist artist from Finland. It started publishing on December 27, 2017 and ended on October 14, 2018.

I started reading this around that time when I felt tired of reading boys’ love comics portraying gay men as completely romantic and/or sexual. This comic was a breath of fresh air with how awkward and funny they can get. Follow Sami’s return to his hometown in the Finnish countryside and his budding relationship with Juha and his daughter, Maiju.

A slice-of-life comic by Kip Trevor, a binary trans man. Published as a series of short episodes, it portrays not only the struggles and joys of the author as a trans man but also those of his friends of different identities within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Revelation of Eros

A slice-of-life comic with art by AkumaYoru based on the real-life story of E.A. This follows the life and self-discovery of Eros after meeting Galen in university. The story is not a smooth boys’ love story and may be heartbreaking at times (prepare some tissues!). Yet, I promise that all those tears and pain are worth it.

This comic has a unique art style brought around by the artist’s use of a mouse to draw. There may be episodes where they cover dark topics relating to Eros’ past or the past and feelings of his friends. However, I think this comic covers ideas that need to be said and discussed.

Eros doesn’t want friends because he doesn’t need anyone in his life. He just wants to be left alone. Starting university in the United States after living in the slums of Mexico his entire life, he must traverse an entirely new world while keeping everyone at a distance. But, no matter how hard he pushes everyone away, there’s people who keep getting closer.

Boyfriends

A slice of life comic by refrainbow (nickname Ray). It follows four boys (known as Prep, Goth, Nerd, and Jock) in a polyamorous relationship. While it may be more on the wholesome side compared to others on this list, it is one of the few Webtoon comics that feature polyamory.

As if the sweet moments between the characters are not enough, the art style is cute, adorable, and pastel. It just makes my heart melt every episode.

A comic about getting yourself a boyfriend…or multiple boyfriends! Four college students begin a polyamorous relationship and navigate the adventure that is their dating life!
