4th VP Choice Awards sets to recognize your best-loved OPM and Music Artist

Village Pipol Choice Awards (VCPA) is back! The most-awaited, and most engaged award-giving body in the Philippines. This year, it is more dazzling, exhilarating, and outstanding.

The 4th VP Choice Awards will recognize your best-loved Composer, OPM song, and Pinoy-Pop Song that captured your heart and resonated with your soul all throughout the year.

Similarly, we are excited to present the official list of nominees for the Entertainment-Music Category. As always, the choice is yours. Listen to your heartbeat. So, don’t hesitate to vote for your favorite music artist.

Highlights of the nominees for Composer, OPM Song, and P-Pop Song of the Year

Composer of the Year

Composing a piece of music is a real superb intellect, talent, and skill since it brings people to another realm or escapism. Hence, here are the outstanding writers and composers that have been loved by many.

John Paulo Nase for SB19’s WYAT

John Paulo Nase or Pablo (stage name) is a talented singer, songwriter, producer, composer, and the leader of a Filipino boy band—SB19. Since their group’s debut in 2018, he contribute to almost all of the released songs. Consequently, here are some of SB19’s songs he has written and contributed to Tilaluha, Go Up, Alab, and Get in the Zone. Pablo is not only a singer but also a rapper. He made his first debut on January 28, 2022, with his solo track La Luna a song full of emotion and creativity as it tells a story to embrace oneself completely. And on September 2022, WYAT is the latest music of SB19, written by Pablo himself.

Moira dela Torre for Kumpas

Moira dela Torre, Filipino singer-songwriter. Because of her iconic, unique, and capturing style of singing, she became loved by Filipino. She became famous for her covers of Sundo by Imago and Torete of Moonstar88. Later on, she is known for her heartbreaking song compositions specifically Malaya and Paubaya. Additionally, her song Tagpuan is one of the most-streamed music on Spotify. On June 9, 2022, she released her new single Kumpas which garners 44,736,244 plays on Spotify.

Zack Tabudlo for Asan Ka Na Ba?

Zack Tabudlo is a Filipino singer, and songwriter. His first solo track is Nangangamba released in 2020. While in 2021 his debut album Episode is out. Moreover, his song “Binibini” dominated Spotify’s 2021 charts as the most streamed song in the Philippines. Furthermore, his compositions that have been mostly streamed on Spotify are Pano, Yakap, and his latest single, Asan Ka Na Ba?

Miguel Benjamin and Paolo Benjamin for Paninindigan

Miguel and Paolo Benjamin are the lead vocals, acoustic guitarists, and songwriters in a folk-pop band in the Philippines—Ben&Ben. The group has been formed since 2015 and made a ruckus during the peak of the pandemic. Ben&Ben is taking over the music industry as they catch and move the heart of its listeners. In 2020-2021 they have recorded as the most-streamed Filipino artist on Spotify. Their popular music is the following: Pagtingin, and Lifetime. Meanwhile, Paninindigan Kita serves as the music of Ben&Ben’s tribute for queer love and pride month, released on May 1, 2022.

Jin Chan for Sarah Geronimo’s Dati-Dati

Jin Chan is a young artist and songwriter. And a versatile learner of composing pop songs. He is the composer of the pop R&B song Dati Dati by Sarah Geronimo and co-wrote Say You Love Me by ALAMAT. But now it’s his turn to make his own music with his first solo track titled Kapeng Malamig released on December 1, 2022.

Arthur Miguel for Ang Wakas

Arthur Miguel is a promising Filipino singer and composer who started on YouTube in 2018. He is popular for his cover of pop songs. Ang Wakas, his single released on February 14, 2022, is about a post-breakup. Meanwhile Pasahili short for Para Sa Hindi Pili is his first album released on October 26, 2022, and already has 2 million streams on Spotify.

OPM Song of the Year

Filipino’s fondness for music is splendid, thus there are numerous OPM that are well-played and streamed on different digital platforms. Have your favorites made it to the list?

Gusto Ko Nang Bumitaw was composed by Jonathan Manalo and co-written by Sheryn Regis. It was originally sung by Sheryn Regis with the intention of having a “purposeful birit,” said Manalo. On the other hand, it was popularized by Morissette Amon as the theme song of the ABS-CBN primetime drama The Broken Marriage Vow. Respectively, Asan Ka Na Ba? by Zack Tabudlo is nominated as OPM Song of the Year.

Hence, it reflects how huge the impact Zack has put on us is. Therefore it is no surprise that Asan Ka Na Ba won Rock/Alternative Song of the Year at the 8th Wish Music Awards on January 22, 2023. Another hit music, Dati-Dati by Sarah Geronimo is currently on top of the ‘Pinoy Pop Playlist 2022’ on Spotify and trending on different platforms. Before 2022 ends it already reaches its highest stream numbers of more than 38,618 since Nov. 10, 2022.

Kumpas by Moira dela Torre which originally inspired by the trending series 2 Good 2 Be True. With 44,736,244 streams on Spotify has been nominated as well as OPM Song of the Year. This leaves a remark on how one’s music can be warm and touching so it resonates with the listener. Mahika collaborated with two young singer-songwriters Adie and Janine Berdin released on May 11. This song talks about happenstance with someone and unexpectedly enchants you. Lastly, Paninindigan Kita by Ben&Ben shows the complexity and diversity of love. Initially, it is about the queer love story of the two Ben&Ben members Agnes Reoma and Pat Lasaten who are now engaged. A prompt telling us how wonderful it is when someone is committed to staying beside you.

P-Pop Song of the Year

Pinoy Pop Songs are indeed making their recognition to its wider reach. Because most of our nominees have been noticed by the international award-giving bodies. Philippines music is prominent, particularly the following:

Another uprising Filipino boy band is BGYO which debuted in 2021 under ABS-CBN’s Star Magic. Magnet is the lead single off their second album BE:US released on 20 October 2022. Written and composed by John Michael Conchada and Julius James De Belen. Despite its recent release it already charted on iTunes Singles Chart and peaked in the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore.

ALAMAT never fails in representing P-Pop songs with the origin of Philippine culture by using multilingual and multiethnic in their music. Ily Ily by Alamat featuring Lyca Gairanod released on August 25, 2022, has reached 400,000 views on YouTube and is continuously at its peak. This music is composed of a diversity of Philippines languages, Pinoy styling, and stories of family and social issues.

NA NA NA | THE BEAST | PUEDE BA

Na Na Na is the fourth track on BINI‘s debut album Born To Win released on October 14, 2021. It became a viral hit on TikTok in November 2021 it has cute vibing music for dance choreography. Currently, there are around 440,000 entries of videos on TikTok making it the most used P-pop genre song.

The Beast by VXON (pronounced as vision) is a single track released on January 7, 2022, marked as the official debut of the group. VXON is a five-member Filipino boy group under Corner Stone Entertainment. Their single records more than 45,000 views on YouTube in a short span of time, a powerful start for this promising group.

Actress, singer, and model Maymay Entrata make another big hit in P-pop music. Aside from her jaw-dropping performance in her single “Amakabogera“. Its fame goes internationally, as she earns a nomination at the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) on November 13. An iconic and unstoppable star as it reflects on her comeback music Puede Ba released on October 21, 2022. Her music video already reached 1,030,917 views on YouTube.

The voting period will take place from February 10 to March 10. To determine the winners below are the criteria for judging:

  • 30% from the VP Choice Awards’ Facebook shares,
  • 20% from Village Pipol’s Facebook shares,
  • 30% from our editorial team, and
  • 20% from the deliverance of the experts’ panel
