RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Gigi Goode comes out as trans-nonbinary
Gigi Goode, the runner-up from the 12th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, recently came out as trans-nonbinary.
The drag artist shared the news last Sunday, August 29, through a video on Instagram.
Recovering from facial feminization surgery, she recalled how she has begun hormone replacement therapy last January.
Her identity
Gigi explained,
“[It] is the process of taking estrogen and testosterone blockers, differing on the person, as a means of bringing in the woman and pushing out the man,”
Later, she confirmed that her identity is a “trans-nonbinary person” who uses she/her as pronouns.
Additionally, she has started the process of legally changing her name to Gigi.
A time to reflect
For Gigi, being in isolation has been “so crucial” for her to have time to reflect on her identity.
Previously, she came out as gender fluid in an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race last 2020.
“It was a realization that I didn’t have much time to process as the episodes were airing. I think, if the world hadn’t shut down and I was going on tour, I wouldn’t have been able to process it further because of the sheer fact that I had this much time to myself and to my thoughts. I had a lot of realizations. One of those realizations came from watching the show Veneno, which, to some of you may sound lame, but the story and not only the story but the characters and the actresses who played the characters in that show completely opened my mind up to who I am and I guess who I’m supposed to be. To me, that is a trans-nonbinary person.”
Moreover, Gigi clarified how she was not hiding her process from her fans, saying,
“I could have made this announcement at the beginning of my journey, and it could’ve been very helpful to some other people, I understand that. But, I also know the influence that strangers on social media have on this type of situations, and so I knew when I started I wanted this to be a journey I was going on by myself, on my own, without any input from the outside world,”
Further, Gigi explained that the only people who knew about her process were her mom and a few close friends.
“[W]hich is exactly the way that I wanted it, up until this point because now we can talk about the procedure that I had done,”
Joining a long history
Gigi now joins an impressive list of trans people who have competed on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
These include Kylie Sonique Love, Carmen Carrera, Jiggly Caliente, Laganja Estranja, Gia Gunn, Peppermint, and Gottmik.
After bowing down to Season 12 winner Jaida Essence Hall, Gigi walked the runway of the Savage x Fenty show by Rihanna.
Also, she appeared in a print campaign for Moschino alongside Drag Race Season 13 winner and fellow House of Avalon member Symone in early 2021.
