Netflix Finds: PH Historical Dramas You Should Watch

We all know that we need to understand our history to remember where we come from. This understanding also helps us explain why things are the way they are today. Furthermore, these stories become even more engaging if we turn them into series and movies that people can watch.

GMA’s historical dramas have always held a special place in our hearts. Many consider this genre the network’s forte due to its captivating storytelling. Here are some GMA historical dramas that are mostly available on Netflix— and I highly recommend them for everyone to watch!

Ilustrado

Dr. Jose Rizal’s life and how he became our national hero has always fascinated me. Moreover, seeing our lessons about him come to life sparked a unique excitement in me that deepened my interest in learning more about his story.

Ilustrado is a 2014 TV series that, unfortunately, isn’t available on Netflix. However, you can still watch it on their YouTube channel. The series follows the life of Dr. Jose Rizal (played by Alden Richards). This also tells about his childhood and the significant works he used to fight against Spanish rule during his time.

Maria Clara at Ibarra

In connection to Ilustrado, Maria Clara at Ibarra is a series based on one of Dr. Jose Rizal‘s works, Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not). The story introduces an additional character, ‘Klay‘ which was portrayed by Barbie Forteza.

This TV series is a must-watch because of its candid depictions of how friars treated our countrymen in the past. What makes it even more interesting is Klay’s role—she not only takes us through the historical novel but also challenges the norms as a modern woman from the future, representing a feminist perspective.

Pulang Araw

Recently, GMA released another historical drama, Pulang Araw, set during the Japanese occupation. The series portrays the harrowing experiences of Filipinos under Japanese rule, including the heartbreaking stories of Filipino comfort women abused during World War II.

The story centers on half-siblings Adelina (Barbie Forteza) and Eduardo (Alden Richards), who form a deep bond after being orphaned as children. As adults, their lives take separate paths—Adelina becomes a vaudeville performer, while Eduardo joins the fight for freedom. Despite the war tearing them apart, their connection remains unbreakable.

Understanding history helps us recognize who we were, fostering a sense of patriotism and helping us avoid repeating the mistakes of the past. While schools teach us about it, we can also deepen our knowledge by watching historical dramas available on both YouTube and Netflix, making it accessible to everyone.
