Why I Listen to These Three Filipino Podcasts
Podcasts fail to capture my interest miserably. On the other hand, music motivates me to regularly visit my Spotify account. As far as I remember, for a long time, I have made at least two to three accounts solely for music listening. Podcasts do not exist in my world until my 1 month free trial of Spotify Premium expired.
The Start of My Podcast Era
It was sometime in May 2022, when I decided to give the podcast a try. During that time, I was listening to my customized playlist on Spotify when suddenly advertisements started bombarding my harmonious shower. Hence, all drenched in water, I decided to search for comedy podcasts to ease my slight frustration.
While I was busy examining the recommended episodes, I discovered a gem. It was an episode of Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast called Lutang Memz (Taylor’s Version).
Directors Antoinette Jadaone and JP Habac host this show. At that time, I didn’t expect them to engage in a very funny conversation because, as directors, I assumed them to be stone-cold serious. Anyways, that very moment marked the beginning of my podcast era.
Podcast Shows I Follow and Why
Since I stumbled upon an episode of the Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast, my interest in podcast shows grew. I also started looking for other podcast shows that will suit my taste. Little did I know, this one episode will introduce me to one of my most beloved hobbies. Yes! Listening to podcasts.
Meanwhile, I only follow three podcasts on Spotify, hence I included three. With that, here are the three Filipino podcast shows I listen to and my reasons for doing so.
1. Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast
As I said, Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast is the first podcast show I immersed myself in. Moreover, in this podcast show, Filmmakers Antoinette Jadaone and JP Habac talk about love, hugot, pop culture, and trending topics. Regardless of the topic of their conversations, they always find a way to laugh, bring insights, and bring laughter.
Promotes Philippine Cinema
Besides being the faces of Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast, it was no secret that they are also Filipino filmmakers. Thus, Directors Antoinette Jadaone and JP Habac dedicated some episodes of their show to talking about Filipino movies and their movies (of course). Meanwhile, they also read letters from their listeners to give advice. At the very end of each episode, they recommend international and local films related to the problems or situations of their letter senders. Through this, Directors Antoinette Jadaone and JP Habac sure promote Filipino cinema in a very effective way. Thus, the appreciation of the two directors for the local films made me watch some of the best Filipino movies ever.
Hilarious and Honest
An episode of Ang Walang Kwentang Podcast will never end without their loud infectious laughter. Just like what I have mentioned, Directors Antoinette Jadaone and JP Habac help their letter senders with their love-related and relationship problems. They do not hesitate to share their hilarious and honest comments but, the best part is they give insightful pieces of advice. On the other hand, they also share their personal experiences such as humble beginnings, works, and achievements, among many others. Sometimes with no filter, but always with laughter.
2. Cine Files
Movies help me escape from the stressful realities in my life. Hence, I enjoy listening to the episodes of Cine Files. In this podcast, two self-proclaimed cinephiles talk about all things film. The unREELiable hosts, Jerfe—your Local Indie Guy and Ron—your Hoerror King, express their analyses of movies, tropes, genres, and even the film industry.
Quality Movie Reviews
Cine Files helps me decide what movies I should give a try because this podcast show gives quality movie reviews. Jerfe and Ron present sharp reviews of the films they have seen. They critique the films’ story, cinematography, actors’ performance, themes, and message. When it comes to the message and themes of the films, the hosts exhibit deep understanding and relate them to real-life happenings and social issues. In addition, they also give some trivia facts about the films. Most importantly, they only give honest movie reviews. Hence, Cine Files not only made me appreciate films on another level, but it also motivates me to enjoy and keenly observe every time I’m watching.
Local Lover
Cine Files is one of the podcast shows on Spotify that promote local films. Jerfe, the Local Indie Guy, always takes pride in Filipino independent films. Most of the time, his watchlists include local films, and he talks about them with so much enthusiasm. Ron, on the other hand, watches local films less. However, he also shares Filipino films on their podcast episodes.
3. Creepsilog
Are you craving something spooky? Perhaps, you should try listening to Creepsilog. This podcast show is hosted by Gideon Mendoza and Glenn Tabarejos. Together, the G boys talk about different topics from creepy to scary such as true crimes, conspiracy theories, and paranormal events, among many others. But, do not worry because they present their topics humorously.
Well-Researched Topics
Gideon and Glenn present their topics comprehensively, especially the true crime stories. During their episodes, the G boys lay much important information such as the background, timeline, pieces of evidence, and trials, among many others. After listening to numerous episodes of Creepsilog, I found out that they spend a lot of time researching information about their topics. Also, they even watch documentary series to back up their research. Now, that is what we call hard work. Overall, for me, their hard work and efforts pay off because they have produced well-rounded episodes.
Scary and Funny
Despite the dark themes of their topics, Gideon and Glenn make sure to give light and laughter. Even if the story becomes heavier and scarier, they always find a way to make the atmosphere fun. With their disturbing stories and funny comments, for sure, their podcast show is a perfect balance of horror and comedy. Hence, I never want to miss a single episode.
So, what are you waiting for? Check them on Spotify for a comedic, creepy, and cinematic listening experience!
