VP/Xclusives | The Ballad of Patrick Quiroz

Sentimentality holds a significant place in the core of the Filipino music experience, giving birth to countless ballads that caught many hearts in captivity through its reverberating melodies and poetic lines—the anthems of nostalgia that hum a blend of familiar feelings from one’s lived memories. And this is the sound that echoes in the melodies of a past recalled and hymns of the present lived, telling a beautiful tale of love, passion, and dreams in the ballad of Patrick Quiroz.

From the vast stages that the young balladeer has stepped on to the virtual arenas that bent the boundaries of time and space, the soulful voice of Patrick resonated with the world he serenades. He sings in a language that yearning souls could understand, and so his audience embraces the warmth of the artistic connection that Patrick creates through his sound. This also unveils the art behind the horizons that he continues to reach in spaces, where his vocal prowess touches millions of hearts.

His power lies in the capacity to evoke a pool of emotions and flash memories back through his soulful storytelling, which has been innate to Patrick as a young balladeer who has always dreamed of serenading the world. “Music ang naging passion ko ever since. Walang isang buwan o linggong hindi ako kumakanta at nakikinig ng music,” he uttered, revealing the essence of his craft to his life as an artist. “I don’t see myself as Patrick Quiroz kung walang music. I really cannot imagine myself not doing it.”

The fragments of his experiences formed his identity in the present. While he persists today in the terrains of the entertainment industry, the young balladeer brings with him the nostalgia of the past—the beautiful beginning of a ballad narrating the journey of Patrick Quiroz.

Verse: Rise of the Young Balladeer

Before realizing the bigger purpose of his passion for music, the foreshadowing of a young balladeer’s rise emerged in the verses of the song performed in mundane karaoke sessions that Patrick would have with his friends and family. The younger him would sing his heart out to the rhythms of classic romantic hits. “Growing up, itong ballad music, isa siya sa mga kinakanta ko kapag nagka-karaoke,” Patrick narrates. Although at that time, the younger him only had a little understanding of the weight that every word in the ballads he sang truly holds, his heart was already certain of the genuine joy that music and singing brought him.

As Patrick continues to reminisce his recollection of early exposure to the beauty of sounds, he reveals a childhood that is not far from how most Filipinos grew their love for music and songs that scream sentimentality: sitting in front of the television on a Sunday afternoon, gazing upon the feast of talent and artistry found in variety shows. It became more than just a typical time for leisure when it began to spark inspiration and form in him a clearer vision of his becoming, as the passionate performances of Gary Valenciano resonated with him.

“Si Sir Gary Valenciano talaga ‘yong naa-amaze ako every time na I would watch him on TV. And I feel like he influenced me with his songs.”

—Patrick Quiroz

The young balladeer not only enjoys the pure energy that Valenciano exudes every time he steps into the spotlight, but also understands and appreciates the magic of narrating a story through the melodies. “Kapag kumakanta kasi siya, he’s full of emotions. Parang hindi siya kumakanta e. It’s more of storytelling, plus ‘yong vocals ni Sir Gary V!” From there, Patrick Quiroz began diving deeper into the world of music, finding his identity, and pursuing a life that echoes his passion.

Fueled by this inspiration, along with his personal encounters with music, the young balladeer found the voice of his artistry that connects with his audience. From listening to the stories of others engraved in the poetic lines of their own ballads, Patrick now dares to share a narrative through his soulful sound that blends the nostalgia of lived experiences and conveys a message to the hearts that yearn.

“You have to know the message of the song and the story behind it. Pero minsan, kapag kumakanta ako ng ballad, nandoon din talaga ‘yong mga pinagdaanan ko e.”

—Patrick Quiroz

His experiences in the past mirror the depth of his artistry in the present, putting the young balldeer’s inspiration and lived experiences into life every time he steps into his own spotlight or even when he just records himself singing in front of the camera. Recently, Patrick Quiroz unfolded another story he wanted to tell the world about; he released his rendition of Extreme’s classic hit More Than Words.

Although the world has heard of this song countless times since its release more than two decades ago, the young balladeer’s take promises a fresh musical experience of listening to this song. Patrick Quiroz dared to blend the sound of the present while preserving its soul. “It’s the same song pero ‘yong areglo, ibang-iba, gano’n din ang tunog dati sa ngayon,” he reveals. But what made it even more personal is the young balladeer’s nostalgia that also emerges in his classic revival.

“‘Yong More Than Words kasi talaga ‘yong na naaalala ko na my dad and I would listen to kapag nagro-roadtrip kami. Up until now, kapag sinusundo niya ako or sinusundo ko siya, we listen to it, vibe with the song.”

Between the Lines, Beyond the Words

Patrick’s version of More Than Words, which was released just a few weeks ago, has already resonated with the hearts of many who either found themselves captivated by the retrospective energy of the classic hit or grooving to the modern take of the young balladeer’s newest revival. One way or another, the song’s powerful lines, sung in a chill melody, will make anyone go head over heels for this hit. But for the young balladeer himself, who introduced its new sound, finds its soul between the lines and beyond the words.

“It speaks about just doing more than words, basically. Kumbaga, gawin mo, di ba? Hindi lang sa salita, but show your love for someone.”

—Patrick Quiroz
As he delved deeper into his recent song, Patrick Quiroz gets real about his take on an affection that goes more than words, literally. While he recognizes the power of a love spoken in carefully chosen words, the young balladeer still believes that putting everything into action takes the affection to another level. “I feel like it applies in general, na oo nga’t mas masaya kung maiparamdam mo sa tao through actions din ‘yong love.” For him, it does not have to be one over another, but he believes that both forms of love should coexist.

“Hindi lang puro salita pagdating sa love; may gawa rin dapat.”

—Patrick Quiroz

When asked about his way of expressing love for others, Patrick was quick to answer acts of service, citing how the people around him perceive his love language. “Nauutusan kasi ako,” Patrick babbled humorously, then proceeded to say that his expression of love is mostly rooted in his voluntary acts of affection for others, specifically for friends and family whom he sees closest to his heart.

Meanwhile, proving the language that he speaks in the name of love, the young balladeer recalled a moment in his life when he did what he considers the most daring thing he did for love. On the other hand, it was not through the lens of romance, but genuine love for his mother, and an act of love for himself. “I left the States. I stopped studying there, and I went here to do show business. Kasi ‘yong mom ko, ever since, ako talaga gusto ko na mag-artista. And then my mom gave that to me with all her support,” Patrick shares, proving the countless shapes that love could come as.

Indeed, Patrick Quiroz consistently reads between the lines and expresses love beyond words, from speaking the language of his affection to his soulful conversations that yearn for the young balladeer’s sound.

Today’s Soft Nostalgia

While Patrick currently enjoys the warm reception of his fans and supporters to his recent release of “More Than Words,” he is also thrilled to drop his upcoming extended play album called Soft, which promises to bring nostalgia. “I recorded this EP almost two years ago now, ‘yong ibang songs. Actually, pakaunti-kaunti siya e. Now, I am very happy na natapos na ‘yong buong recording namin,” the young balladeer excitedly shared.

Patrick revealed four other ballad tracks featured aside from the classic hit of Extreme: “Back At One,” “Heaven Knows,” “Your Song,” and “No One Else Comes Close.” He also shared that each masterpiece was crafted with a more modern take while maintaining its integrity to the souls of its original versions. “Kapag kumakanta kasi ako, minsan, bigla na lang lumalabas ‘yong ibang version e, even when singin it for the first time. So no’ng nire-record ko ‘yong mga songs na ito for my EP, biglang mayroon akong suggestion,” Patrick narrated, sharing how we would sometimes request to re-record certain parts to change styles. “Minsan, gagawan ko sila ng mga riffs and runs na pwedeng gawin doon for my recording. Some of them are really impromptu, actually.”

More than nostalgia that everybody could experience in this new era of the young balladeer, Patrick revealed another reason for the album’s sentimental value, fondly recalling his childhood moments. “My mom and dad would always listen to them, kaya rin siguro napili ko ‘yong mga songs na ‘yon. Kasi naging part sila ng chilhood ko.” For Patrick, this milestone in his journey in the music industry attests to the realization of his dreams.

“I’ve been wanting to release a cover or to revive classic songs, and now it’s happening! It’s very exciting and important for me, and I am very happy about this. I feel like it speaks so much about what I went through.”

—Patrick Quiroz

Given that this album is a testament to his relentless effort in realizing his dreams, Patrick celebrates the upcoming release of his extended play album with the people who believed in the power of his soulful sound while also dedicating this milestone to the individuals who made it possible. “Kalahati nito, I would give to my family and the management kasi di naman siya mangyayari kung wala rin sila,” Patrick shares.

On the other hand, the persistence of the young balladeer in the spectrum of his journey knows no end. Patrick Quiroz reveals that he will soon be releasing another original song, which he personally worked on. “I’m very excited kasi almost three years ago ko pa siya nasulat, and now we’re working on it and releasing it after the EP,” Patrick reveals, while teasing about his side that people can expect from his upcoming original.

“Makikita n’yo kung paano ako nagmahal, kung paano ako magmahal, at kung paano ako nasaktan.”

—Patrick Quiroz
The story and sound of the young balladeer today consistently find their roots in the depths of his lived experiences, ringing a sense of nostalgia and keeping the memories alive. As he persists in singing the melodies of the past and humming hymns of the present, he will continue to write and live the tale of love, passion, and dreams—the ballad of Patrick Quiroz.
