Songs From 5 Musicals That Get Me Through My Day
Everyone has those songs that are just the perfect fit for whatever we’re currently doing or feeling. That’s why we curate playlists for workouts, late-night shifts, study nights, and many more. Sometimes, there are just days that are a little more trying. Then, we have to be a little more steadfast. That’s when I play songs from musicals that actually get me through my day.
Songs From 5 Musicals That Get Me Through My Day
Carrying The Banner
I’m a journalism student. So, imagine my curiosity when I heard about the existence of the Broadway musical Newsies. The story revolves around a group of newsboys in New York in 1899. They went a strike against John Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst for raising the prices of the newspapers that they have to sell.
Carrying The Banner became their introduction where they sing about their daily routine. The song helps me feel motivated during a difficult day due to its energetic choreography. I can imagine it even when I’m just listening to the song. Aside from that, it also motivates me due to its lyrics. It sounds determined, funny, and lively. Plus, I can’t help but feel like I can do anything.
The Schuyler Sisters
Admittedly, this remains one of the most loved songs from the world-famous musical Hamilton. And, I, too will proclaim my love for The Schuyler Sisters. Angelica, Eliza, and Peggy Schuyler go downtown to be among the working minds of New York.
If you’re not familiar with Hamilton or this song, you probably know that one HAS TO DO the choreography. Listening to it, it always makes me feel uplifted and it wakes me right up because I have to sing and rap along. It doesn’t even matter that I can’t sing or rap well.
I’d Rather Be Me
In Mean Girls, there is a scene where all the girls assemble in the gymnasium. Then, Janis gets up on stage. In the Broadway musical version of the film, I’d Rather Be Me became the speech she says in a song.
Do you ever feel like you just want all the foolishness in your day to disappear? It’s not good for the long run. And, to be honest, it’s just plain annoying. Listening to this song allows me to feel solid and somehow, understood.
Two-Player Game
Have you seen the viral trend of people saying the different versions of the quote, It’s better than drugs, Jeremy! It’s actually from the musical Be More Chill where high school student Jeremy Heere swallows a pill that takes over him. This, then, pushes him to popularity. The song that I always come back to is Two-Player Game.
Jeremy and his best friend, Michael Mell, sing about surviving high school and the world together. It’s always nice to hear friends talking about making it through their struggles together. Stuff like this that lifts my spirits up. It’s wholesome and funny. The video game sounds attached in the song also sound amusing and a nice touch.
Everlasting
I don’t always need songs that sound intense or upbeat. Sometimes, I just need something like Everlasting from Tuck Everlasting. Good girl Winnie Foster has to choose between never growing old or living as a normal person.
It’s a song I play when the day is nearing an end. The song gives me a visual of coming out of a forest. It feels as if you’re on the way to your home. Aside from that, it just makes me contemplate life as it is.
Music is one of the greatest things in life. It’s a good thing that we can rely on whatever we’re feeling and whatever we’re going through. When you have hard days, I hope – just like me – you find your solace and motivation in music, too.
