Lisa sweetly apologizes for cultural appropriation in ‘Money’ Exclusive Performance Video
Last week, BLACKPINK‘s Lisa was under fire for alleged cultural appropriation in her ‘MONEY’ exclusive performance video. Lisa’s hairstyle, box braids, have upset fans and others.
A fan lecture
On Monday, the K-Pop star had an online fan sign event for her first single album, LALISA.
During one fan sign meeting, a fan read a well-mannered letter to Lisa about cultural appropriation. It was with good intentions, educating Lisa about the topic.
Lisa was very much willing to listen. The idol asked staff members to extend the fan sign meeting to six minutes. It was originally supposed to be for only 90 seconds.
Lalisa sincerely apologized, saying she had no intentions to hurt anyone. She wants her fans to know she is genuinely sorry. She almost cried at the thought of hurting people as she didn’t realize it was offensive.
Lisa said that she will be more careful next time and double-check everything. In the end, she thanked her fan for the acknowledgment.
Many Blinks and other fans were very happy to see how a fan took the time and effort to educate Lisa about this topic. Also, many people were glad to hear Lisa’s reflection and sincere apologies.
Cultural appropriation has been very prevalent in the K-Pop industry ever since the early days. It is good that it has been brought to the attention of an idol as big as BLACKPINK’s Lisa.
A genuine apology
I encourage every fan of K-Pop to support Lisa and come to her defense when it is needed. However, I also want to let everyone know that there are things we don’t know are really offensive to other cultures.
We should learn every day and be respectful of their wishes. Not being directly affected by something doesn’t mean that it doesn’t offend others.
We should be protective of our idols but not to the point that we oversee issues like this. I applaud Lisa for handling this very sweetly. I am happy that she is willing to learn and grow.
It is also evident that she is genuine in being unaware of committing cultural appropriation. Besides, this is not her idea or fault. It is YG’s management.
This effort of Lisa just proves how lovable she is as an idol. She wants to be respectful and her fans’ feelings are important to her. We stan a queen.
