Top 5 Saddest Music Videos
Humans are very visual creatures, which is why sometimes sounds aren’t enough. It’s a good thing that music videos are a thing , and in fact SOME songs would be a total bore without it!
What makes a good music video? I for one, certainly believe that the more emotion a piece of art elicits from a person, the better it is. That being said, here’s a list of the best, and the saddest music videos of all time.
#5 The Scientist – Coldplay
The combination of music and plot of this MV is truly something else, it is certainly a tug to the heart. It shows a man (Chris Martin) walking backward. A motion that is even more amplified with a line from the song “Oh, take me back to the start.”
Towards the end of the music video, it was shown that his significant other died, as a result of a car crash. Then it continues to rewind until Chris Martin is indeed back to the start. With her girl, happily driving on the road.
#4 Hurt – Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash attained great feats in the music industry during his youth. In other words, he’s one of the best-selling musicians of all time.
These were evidently looked back on in this music video. His frailness is evident and his nostalgia was shown with young clips of him from the past.
The lyrics are thick with longing for his legendary young life. Seven months after the filming of this music video, Johnny Cash met his demise.
#3 Runaway Train – Soul Asylum
The music video feature real-life missing youths of America.
Out of all the missing kids featured in this music video, 21 were found and were able to come back home. In short, they made something more incredible than their music. I guess the sad ending of the music video was not the end of it.
#2 Shake me down – Cage the elephant
The song starts with a man leaving his wife asleep as he goes for his usual morning run. At first, the run started conventionally until it became a blurry and incoherent summary of his life which showed growing up, grief, happiness, and love.
Meanwhile, his wife and everyone he loves was waiting for him in a low-lit open field, just waiting for him to reach the end of the tunnel. There they let lanterns fly explicitly symboling the light leaving from the man.
#1 Little Motel – Modest Mouse
The music video is in reverse, an emotional masterpiece, but you wouldn’t want to know the beginning of it.
It shows a mother smiling at his sleeping son in the beginning. At first, it was a normal mother-and-child trip until we get to the end of the video.
Spoiler alert, the sleepy little boy is in fact, not sleeping.
If you’re in for a cry session, better give one of these music videos a watch! Tap that play button and cue the tears!
