Taylor Swift becomes first woman to win BRITs Global Icon award
Wow! Another “first” for women in the BRITs—Taylor Swift becomes the first woman to ever win the Global Icon Award.
Taylor Swift just can’t stop being an icon. As E! News put it, she just filled a huge blank space in BRIT Awards history.
During the first BRIT Awards since the U.K.’s initial lockdown last spring amid the coronavirus pandemic, on Tuesday, May 11 at the 2021 BRIT Awards, the icon accepted the Global Icon Award. This made her the first woman and first non-British star to be granted the accolade.
The Artist of the Decade—Swift—joined an exclusive group of Global Icon honorees, as she should. This solely includes Elton John, David Bowie, and Robbie Williams.
For the big awards show, the star was gorgeous in a beaded and rhinestone-embellished crop top and matching skirt from Miu Miu. Throughout the event, several artists also praised her work, such as Ed Sheeran and Annie Lennox. Her best friend, Selena Gomez declared in the video,
Taylor is the same girl I met when I was 15. She is generous and kind and cares so deeply for her fans.
Right after, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams presented the artist with the award.
In her acceptance speech, Taylor said,
I want to thank my friends and family who know exactly who they are. Whose opinion of me never changed whether my stock was up or down. If there’s one thing that I’ve learned, it’s that you have to look around every day and take note of the people who have always believed in you and never stop appreciating them for it.
Being the inspiration that she is, the music icon shared an inspiring message for billions of her fans all around the world,
I need you to hear me when I say that there is no career path that comes free of negativity. If you’re being met with resistance, that probably means that you’re doing something new. If you’re experiencing turbulence or pressure, that probably means that you’re rising and there might be times where you put your whole heart and soul into something and it is met with cynicism or skepticism. You cannot let that crush you. You have to let it fuel you because we live in a world where anyone has the right to say anything they want about you at anytime. But just please remember that you have the right to prove them wrong.
Swift is also a nominee for International Female Solo Artist in addition to her Global Icon recognition. Amazing artists join her in this category, such as Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Cardi B, and Miley Cyrus.
The music superstar’s accolades just keep coming, making a huge splash with the release of Fearless (Taylor’s Version) on April 9. She was also the recipient of the 2021 Grammy Award for Album of the Year along with five more nominations.
Despite being one of the biggest names in the industry for already over a decade, the success of the legendary Miss Taylor Swift seems endless. The media put her through many hardships over the years, but she’s still winning to this day. Haters just gotta stay pressed, I guess. Swifties and the queen will always reign supreme.
