Understanding Different Facial Skin Types

Different facial skin types

Our faces are diverse, and it requires a personalized skincare routine based on our facial skin type. Moreover, CeraVe has categorized five prevalent skin types, providing a valuable framework for individuals to identify their own facial skin type.

Understanding Different Facial Skin Types

All skin types can benefit from daily cleansing and moisturizing, but different skin types—which include oily, dry, normal, combination, and sensitive skin—have different needs. That’s why understanding your skin type is the first step in properly caring for it.

CeraVe, What Type of Skin Do I Have?

Every skin type possesses distinct characteristics that can identify which category your skin falls under. The unifying factor is the ability to assess your facial sebum production.

Furthermore, doing a simple ‘test’ can determine how much your face can produce sebum. You can wash your face then don’t put any skincare product on it, and leave it for one hour to see how oily can your face get. Does your face appear and feel oily? Or maybe your skin felt dry after leaving it for an hour?

No matter what it is, one thing’s for sure, is that you can determine your skin type. However, there are also other things you can look into before characterizing your skin.

Different Skin Types

Oily Skin Type

Excessive sebum production characterizes oily skin, resulting in a shiny and greasy appearance. The oil in this skin type is usually found in the T-zone: which includes the forehead, nose, and chin. People of this skin type are more prone to breakouts.

For those with oily skin, dermatologists advise using hydrating products that provide moisture without causing pore blockage. Also, a gentle foaming cleanser is ideal for people with this skin type because it can remove dirt-causing pimples.

Dry Skin Type

Dry skin typically generates fewer natural oils compared to other skin types, resulting in a dull appearance. Another sign of a dry skin type is having rough, flaky, or even scaly skin textures.

Since having this skin type can result in sensitive skin, a person must protect their skin barrier. Hence, selecting gentle, soothing, and hydrating skincare products, along with incorporating multiple moisturizing sessions, is highly recommended. People with dry skin should also avoid long and warm showers, as this can disrupt their skin barrier.

Normal Skin Type

This skin type is balanced, it’s not too dry or oily. It’s also not prone to acne and breakouts. They rather have a small and smooth texture that doesn’t cause any skin sensitivity.

To maintain this, it’s ideal to lock in moisture to keep its hydration— thus supporting your skin’s protective barrier.

Combination Skin Type

Individuals with combination skin types often are often seen with an oily T-zone while simultaneously experiencing dryness in the cheek area. This skin type may fluctuate throughout different seasons and also as a result of various factors, such as stress or hormonal changes.

To care for this skin type, a person must craft a customized skincare routine that can aid both the oily and dry areas accordingly. As such, having an effective cleansing and hydration is also key.

Sensitive Skin Type

Almost all other facial skin types mentioned above can also have sensitive skin. Hence, individuals with sensitive skin frequently encounter a burning or itching sensation and develop a reddish appearance when exposed to irritants like strong fragrances.

Dermatologists advise using gentle cleansers with minimal to no fragrance and avoiding products containing certain ingredients. Checking product labels becomes a valuable ally for individuals with sensitive skin. Furthermore, consulting with a dermatologist is advisable to receive personalized skincare recommendations tailored to your skin’s needs.

See, there are a lot of characteristics that you can consider before you decide your skin type.

Moreover, mainstream skincare products are not universally suitable, so it’s essential to do identify your facial skin type before buying products.
