Things to Look Forward to Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All

The Bones and All cast graces the enchanting floating city for the premiere at the Venice Film Festival, receiving an 8.5-minute standing ovation. This creates history as so far this year, the film gains the longest applause at the festival.

The romance-horror film stars Dune’s Timothée Chalamet, Waves’ Taylor Russell, and is directed by Luca Guadagnino, known for Call Me By Your Name (2017). The premiered film receives a rating of 89% from Rotten Tomatoes, and 6.9 from IMDb, while Metacritic gives it a 74%. Thus, see the things to look forward to in Bones and All when it hits the theaters in November.

See how the story unfolds

The entangled lives of two misfit teenagers in the late 80s get into a long road journey. Along the ride, they slowly fall in love, but also fall with their cannibalistic urges. This romance-horror film follows how the desire to eat human flesh is hereditary.

Maren (Taylor Russell), a young cannibal searches for her mother who she happens to take after for her condition. As she travels along Great Plains and the Great Lakes, Maren meets another cannibal named Sully. He is a human flesh eater who teaches Maren how to use her sense of smell. Afterward, this eventually leads Maren on meeting Lee (Timothée Chalamet), a young cannibal too who helps her find her mother and the one she falls for.

How faithful the film is to the books?

Luca Guadagnino not only collaborated with his Call Me By Your Name’s muse, Timothee Chalamet again but also with his screenwriter for the horror film Suspiria (2018), David Kajganich. As the Bones and All is a film adaptation, expectation looms over how they faithfully follow the 2015 novel of Camille DeAngelis, bearing its same title.

Because based on the reviews during its world premiere, the screenwriter switches the role of Maren’s parents for the film. Originally, the young cannibal searches for her father in the book, while her mother abandons her. Moreover, the atmosphere of the film is said to be between Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria. So look forward to what could be the other changes in the plot for it to fit into the film.

Anticipate the gore scenes

Expect a romance-filled coming-of-age film in the Bones and All. But this will challenge the audience on how will they fall in love with Maren and Lee. Because they are bound to be disgusted by lots of unpleasant gore scenes from the two cannibals.

It was said that at the beginning of the film, Maren will introduce the audience to her cannibalistic urges. So, look forward to some scene that may possibly showcase a half-chewed finger. While for Lee, it takes a cornfield rendezvous for him to let the viewers see him eating human flesh. Those are just some sights to anticipate to assess how this film would meet its horror genre.

Throwing heteronormativity

As Bones and All is set in the Reagan era which marked the period of conservative then-American President Ronald Reagan, the film showing queerness is intentional. Historically speaking, queerness especially in the 80s also lives at the edge of structured society.

Maren and Lee both show tension with the other characters in the film. The former packs a tension-filled scene with her new same-sex friend. While the latter seduces a guy from the carnival to see him on the cornfield for some rendezvous.

The chemistry between the lead stars

The pairing of Academy Award nominee Timothée Chalamet and rising actress Taylor Russell is new and fresh to see. Something to look forward on the film is the chemistry between them on the big screen. Based on the reviews of film critics, the two exude strong chemistry that seems to make the audience fall in love with them too.

The Bones and All has scheduled to release on November 23 in the United States. The date of its debut in theaters in other countries is currently unconfirmed. However, this film already deserves a spot on your movie bucket list so look forward to it.
