VP Spotlight | Arizona Brandy: Reigning on her own terms

Arizona B… B is for budots. B is for bold. B is for beautiful. But perhaps today, B is for becoming.

Arizona Brandy has moved through different spaces in her career—each one unfolding a new layer of who she is and what she can become.

For some, reaching one goal is enough. But for her, it is only the beginning. Every achievement opens another door, revealing parts of herself she is only beginning to understand.

Because becoming for her isn’t about changing who you are, it’s about discovering who you’ve been all along.

“I want to show that I’m not just a comedy queen.”

Arizona B… B is for BOUNDLESS

For Arizona, no version of herself has ever been final. Her career has always been in motion, constantly expanding the boundaries of who she could be as a performer.

And somewhere along that movement, a new kind of presence begins to surface. Now, she finds herself stepping into what many call her “fashion queen era.”

But for Arizona, it is less about the title and more about intention.

For her, fashion is not a mold to fit into, but a space to express what already exists within. It is about choosing what feels right, what feels honest, and what feels like her.

“Being a fashion queen is like embracing your own style, embracing what you feel like wearing, embracing what you feel like portraying. I think that’s one of the things I have.”

And this openness is now reflected in the way she dresses and the silhouettes she chooses to embody. While orange hues and larger-than-life looks once defined parts of her drag aesthetic, Arizona now leans toward something more refined.

Clean lines, simpler forms, and precise fits have become her preference—an evolution that does not erase her past choices, but refines them.

Yet Arizona refuses to be defined by fashion alone.

If there is one thing her journey has taught her, it is that growth should never be mistaken for limitation.

That same mindset is what has led her toward another creative space: music.

These days, Arizona finds herself enjoying the process of creating songs, embracing a side of artistry that allows her to express herself in a different way.

“Now I’m in a phase where I’m creating music and I’m enjoying it.”

To her, becoming is never about changing who she is. It is about making room for more of it.

Arizona B… B is for BORDERLESS

The beauty of drag, Arizona believes, lies in its ability to exist anywhere.

She underscores that drag queens are not just for bars. drag can’t be boxed, and ultimately, drag can be mainstream.

For 11 years in the industry, Arizona has remained grounded in the same purpose that first drew her to drag. When asked what she loves most about being a drag queen, her answer is not the makeup, the hair, or even the clothes. Instead, it has always come back to the people.

“I always interact with people and give entertainment. That’s been my priority ever since.”

But experience has also taught her that entertainment is not a fixed formula. Looking back, Arizona Brandy admits that she once relied heavily on the kind of performances that thrived on spontaneity and excess, even drinking on stage as part of the experience she delivered to audiences.

Today, Arizona performs drag differently than she did years ago—not because her goal has changed, but because she has deepened her understanding of what drag can be. In the past, being entertaining often took precedence over everything else. Presentation came second to the energy of the performance. Now, she sees those elements as working together.

“That’s what I realized lately. There are so many ways to be entertaining. It’s not just what I’m used to. Before, you didn’t pay attention to being presentable. You’re just trying to give entertainment without focusing on how you look on stage.”

Arizona approaches drag with a wider perspective. What has changed is not her commitment to entertaining people—it is the many ways she has learned to do it.

“I want to bring an Arizona version that’s not just a joke, but something that you’ll take seriously while still having fun.”

Through that growth, she continues to prove what she has believed throughout her career: drag cannot be boxed in. Whether on a stage, a screen, or any platform willing to embrace it, drag can exist anywhere.

Arizona B… B is for BEACON

As drag continues to reach wider audiences, so does the influence of the queens who represent it. For many young queer Filipinos, Arizona’s journey offers something equally important: reassurance.

“It’s okay to be afraid because the path to acceptance is really scary, but there’s always someone who’s going to be on your side.”

Drawing from her own experiences, Arizona proves that visibility matters. It not only allows people to be seen, but also reminds others that they are not alone.

“I don’t believe that there are people who are alone. You’re always not alone. Maybe you just didn’t find the right person to be your company. But there are so many. Even for me, we don’t know each other personally but know that I’m on your side.

For her, reassurance comes from knowing that your place and your people are out there, even if it takes time to find them. Until then, it is enough to keep going, knowing that there are others who understand, who listen, and who stand with you even from afar.

She also reassures others that imperfection is something to embrace—especially as someone many people look up to.

She reflected on how, at times, it can feel as though people are simply waiting for you to make a mistake, and how frightening it can be to exist under that kind of pressure.

“But I realized that it’s okay to make mistakes. That’s where some people love us. They see that we’re the same, we have these flaws, and it’s okay.”

Arizona Brandy also looks toward the future with hope. She believes that as time goes on, acceptance will become more visible, opportunities will become wider, and queer people will be able to live more freely and openly.

Arizona B… B is for BECOMING

Across every “B” that has traced her journey—Boundless, Borderless, Beacon—one truth remains unchanged: the presence that first made her unforgettable. A presence rooted in connection, in performance, and in the rare ability to inhabit every space not just as a performer, but as someone fully, unapologetically alive within it.

For Arizona, becoming is never about reaching a final version of herself. It is embracing every version of who she is: the entertainer, the fashion lover, the musician, the dreamer, and the queen who refuses to be boxed in.

If Arizona Brandy has proven anything, it’s that growth does not require abandoning who you are. Sometimes, it simply means giving yourself permission to become everything you were meant to be—all while having fun along the way.
