The Underside of Filipino Migration
There are different reasons why Filipinos have the highest migration rate in Asia. Filipinos have the tendency to choose to pursue professions and opportunities in foreign countries with the hopes that this would lead them to brighter futures.
Migration for these Filipinos that are chasing the “American Dream” may be a good thing or a dream come true. However, this must be an alarming concept and problem that Filipinos must resolve and give attention to.
Migration as a means of Survival
The first reason why Filipinos choose to migrate to another country is predominantly economic. Our rising population and demographical density continue to cause a rise in unemployment in the country. This means that while our country is producing more people as manpower resources, fewer opportunities are made available.
Furthermore, the unfair wages that are paid for the labor of Filipino blue collared workers also cause migration rates to increase. This is since the economic design of other countries is so heavily regulated that companies have no choice but to pay and provide fair wages to their employees.
Educational Equality
The next reason is education. The lack of a proper and intensive educational system in the Philippines that is accessible to everyone is what urges Filipinos to pursue their academic endeavors in other countries.
Filipinos have one of the highest percentages of diploma owners in Asia. However, the quality of education that Filipinos receive is not enough to make them globally competent. Capacitated enough to compete with other educated individuals in their fields. This means that to ensure and secure better careers many Filipinos opt to raise their families abroad.
Quality of Life
Finally, the third reason why many Filipinos opt and choose migration over staying in their respective country and locality is the reality that the quality of life and social awareness in other countries are more impressive. The Philippines continues to be one of the most dangerous places for women and people with disability. This means that many parents do not feel like the Philippines is a secure and safe country to raise their young children in.
Precious' only desire for the future is to be more human. The world we live in has shackled us in the limitations of practicality that we are taught that to be human is to be weak. She wants to change that narrative and attempt to prove that the best way to progress and equality is by amplifying our humanity. Believe it or not- she absurdly believes that this could be done through writing. On a more formal and boring note she has a journalism degree with plans to pursue legal studies in the future.
