Instagram Reels offers new editing features similar to TikTok
Reels, Instagram’s TikTok competitor, has received a number of new features today, including a new way to edit videos. Users will now be able to edit uploaded video clips, audio, stickers, and text overlays all on one screen instead of having to do them separately.
A screenshot shared by the company shows a timeline editing feature similar to TikTok, which helps align audio and video clips and smooth transitions. Until now, Reels users haven’t had an easy way to see which videos were trending. Trends and challenges that are easy to recreate are what made TikTok a viral content incubator.
The new Reels page gathers hashtags and songs trending on Instagram, along with how many videos use that audio. Users can then save the audio for later use or apply it directly to their own videos.
Creators can also use the update to analyze the performance of their content and engage with their fans. Reel’s analytics dashboard will now display the total amount of time audiences spent watching a video, including replays, as well as the average watch time and notifies creators when new followers find them through Reel.
Content creators haven’t been happy with how they make money on platforms like Instagram and TikTok – both have been overhauling or cutting funds intended to reward users for high-performing content.
A new update to Reels gifting feature will show which creators have received gifts from fans. TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram all have versions of virtual tips from fans. By tapping a heart icon, they can acknowledge it.
