One of the largest online selling platforms in the country, Shopee, announces Toni Gonzaga as its newest ambassador. As the new face for their incoming 10.10 Brands Festival, Shopee officially made the announcement on Thursday, September 29.

A polarizing figure nowadays, this recent project by the Ultimate Multimedia Star has already made huge waves on social media. As would be expected, this is a contentious issue, and many people have already voiced their views—both positive and negative.

Yesterday, the e-commerce giant posted a teaser, informing its users of a very important announcement. With the caption, “FINALLY, makikilala niyo na siya,” the clip shows an unknown woman.

Many people immediately rushed to social media to voice their dismay once they started to guess about the identity and realized it was Toni. Since then, Shopee, Toni, and other related topics started to trend non-stop.

Well known for her political position, Toni is one of President Ferdinand “Bong-Bong” Marcos Jr.’s ardent supporters. Prior to the ‘big reveal’, an influx of users began to boycott the endorsement by uninstalling the app.

This included Jaime Fabregas. Although no names were mentioned, it appears that the actor was referring to his former ABS-CBN colleague in his tweet.

The situation also brought up the recent news of Shopee Philippines downsizing its employees. Aiming to “optimize” its business due to a loss of $931.2 million in the second quarter of 2022.

This development along with their team-up with the celebrity host only added fuel to the already raging fire. Creative Director Gerry Cacanandin has this to say about the situation.

Bad reception is still good publicity

On the other side of the spectrum, fans of Toni quickly respond to the backlash. In defense, they commend Shopee for its audacious approach and assert that the tactic was best for the company. They also criticize the cancel culture movement, calling it overused, and irrelevant to Toni’s success.

Cool and seemingly unfazed, Toni, during the event thanks the netizens for their continuous support. Saying that they are grateful for the spike of mentions and engagements they have been receiving.
