Skin flooding and why is it trending on TikTok?

I don’t use TikTok that often anymore. But, when I do, there’s always a new beauty trend. However, the thing about these beauty trends revolves around us taking them with a grain of salt. Sometimes, these become more of a novelty than a hack. But, then, there are those that are actually legit. Recently, I was scrolling through TikTok when I found someone talking about something called skin flooding. This refers to a product-layering method that drenches a dry complexion with a bunch of juicy moisture.

So, what is skin flooding?

Once I heard about it, I just have to research more about it. Apparently, skin flooding means applying hydrating products in the correct order. That way, you get as much moisture as possible. So, basically, you have to apply hydrating serum to damp skin and seal it in with a moisturizer. But, isn’t that what you’re actually supposed to do?

I was confused reading about it and even more confused about why it had become a trend. There’s a dermatologist-recommended skincare routine for a reason. Haven’t people been following it that they need to put a name for it? Because skin flooding isn’t a new concept. It’s basically a take on what experts have been telling us on how to do our skincare since the beginning.

The order you apply your hydrating products matters.

The thing is, and I thought people already know about it, you could apply all the hydrating products that you own and still not have moisturized skin if you don’t follow the basic rules of application. Layering all your hydrating ingredients and putting them on correctly will make all the difference in the world.

So, basically, you will need to layer with more water-based products first before putting on the higher oil content. Apply your toner or essence first, serum, gel, lotion, cream, and then ointment. This, then, maximizes the delivery of moisture into your skin. Aside from that, it also maintains the amount of moisture that needs to be kept in your skin.

Basically, we just need to listen to experts after all.

So, after cleansing your skin with a gentle cleanser, you spritz a hydrating face mist on your face. You can even spray it on in between layers if you want. Then, you can put on the essences and serums like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide.

During the morning, you can put on a lightweight moisturizer over before sticking with a sunscreen that you trust. For the nighttime, on the other hand, you can put on night creams and sleeping masks to replace your sun protection.

When it comes to a skin flooding skincare routine, you will have to pay attention to the formulas that work best for you. If you know that a certain moisturizer clogs your pores and leads to acne breakouts, you need to skip it and switch to lightweight hydrating serums instead.

Skin flooding isn’t a groundbreaking new discovery. It is something that all of us should be doing.
