Indie Role-Playing Games Everyone Should Try

Before the dawn of modern RPGs with insane graphics, a lot of us grew up playing indie games with pixelated designs. Indie games played a huge role in our childhood and it is something we’d always love to reminisce about. Fortunately, indie games are not just a thing of the past as it is still hugely patronized by the gaming community. Indie games are a genre that still thrives today because they paved the way for game creators to share their geeky shenanigans with fellow gamers.

Indie games are usually known for their adorable graphics, simple gameplay, and deep and articulate storylines. These story-driven role-playing games (that are usually also just chill and fun to play) are for all ages to enjoy. They work as a great leisure activity. They stimulate your brain while just chilling with the cute graphics and immersing yourself in the fictional world of the game.

So to set you up, here is a list of indie games you should definitely try!

Aveyond

Created by Aveyond Studios (formerly Amaranth Games), Aveyond is a role-playing video game series set in an archaic high fantasy medieval world. The story revolves around the adventurous journey of the player in ambitious attempts to save the world from evil, with plenty of side quests to complete.

The series has five installments, with a total of 8 games. Starting from the prequel “Ahriman’s Prophecy” released in 2004 followed by Aveyond 1: Rhen’s Quest; Aveyond 2: Ean’s Quest; Aveyond 3: Orbs of Magic (which consists of four separate parts); and Aveyond 4: Shadow of the Mist (the fourth and latest installment) consecutively.

Each installment tells a tale of an adventurous journey. You will meet characters that will help you reach your goal. If you are into D&D, you will definitely enjoy this one because you can play as different mythical creatures. The series is playable on PC and is available on their website for purchase.

To The Moon

Developed by Freebird Games, To The Moon series is a single-player RPG game. The game was nominated for many awards and was even voted the best indie RPG of 2011. The story is about a company called Sigmund Corporation that uses a technology that can create artificial memories.

They offer this service to people on their death beds which they call “wish fulfillment.” But since these artificial memories may conflict with the patient’s real memories, the procedure is only legal to do on people without much time left to live. The video game series has a total of four installments.

To The Moon, A Bird Story, Finding Paradise, and Impostor Factory, published in chronological order. Dive into the mysterious and heartwarming world of this series. To The Moon will make you cry and curious because of its carefully-woven psychological drama. The series is available on PC and mobile.

Witchbrook

You might think it’s a little weird to put an unreleased game on this list but this one looks promising. Withbrook is an indie RPG under development by Chucklefish, an 18-people team based in London. Witchbrook is a pixel world full of charm and adventure.

Explore the school of magic and forge your identity as a graduating witch-in-training. Build relationships and friendships, and achieve magical abilities by attending classes and completing assignments.

You can also participate in extracurricular activities such as growing magical crops, fishing, and hunting strange mushrooms. Master secret spells and unravel the mysteries of the school with your friends. You can add the game to your Wishlist on Steam. The release date is still unknown but you can always check their website for updates.

Hollow Knight

Yet another proof that a game does not have to have really cool or brutalist designs for it to be a great one graphics-wise. It can have adorable designs – almost childlike details and just overall simple and cute graphics but behind this cute impression is a story and gameplay like no other.

Hollow Knight is also full of twists and lore and an extremely interesting and fun world to explore. It allows the players the freedom to navigate the game and unravel the story of an epic action-adventure game set in a vast ruined kingdom of insects and heroes.

You would play as the enigmatic Knight who would reveal the mysteries of the kingdom and conquer its evils. It is a game you would sit on for hours and hours of exploration and adventure. Definitely, a must-try for those who enjoy a story-driven game packed with action and impressive gameplay. Hallow Knight is available on Steam for purchase.
