Climate Crisis: Hurry before it kills us.

“The climate emergency is a race we are losing, but it is a race we can win.”

United Nations

The desperation of scientists around the world to address climate change seriously imposes that the climate crisis needs a collective response immediately.

Scientists around the world are taking their plights on the streets. They are staging protests against the government, major companies, and organizations to address the climate crisis seriously.

Recently, the video of Peter Kalmus, a scientist at NASA has gone viral online after his emotional protest talking about the climate crisis. He is also among the three scientists who have chained themselves at the JPMorgan Chase building in Los Angeles in an effort to stop the bank’s decision to invest in fossil fuels. According to the Huffington Post, the company has invested more money than any other bank.

The Problem of Climate Crisis We Neglect.

Industrialization and capitalism make it all too evident that we are now experiencing global warming and climate change. Global warming is the gradual heating of the Earth’s atmosphere. Meanwhile, climate change refers to the rapid changes in the weather system.

The sudden extreme heat and the unexpected heavy rainfall are one of the consequences of climate change and we are no exception from the devastating consequence of this catastrophic phenomenon. Not even the most powerful or richest man could be saved from this. But what really caused our Earth’s system to deteriorate?

The burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and heavy vehicles are several of the major causes of climate change. The unstoppable human activities are contributing to massive carbon emissions. This caused the heating of the atmosphere which leads to a greater threat and loss to human life and existence.

Annually, there are more than 20 typhoons visiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). This results in a large number of casualties, loss of livelihood, a threat to security, and a collapse of the economy. Talking about climate change is not enough if the leading sectors won’t cooperate in combatting this crisis.

Major Companies in the Fight Against Climate Change

They say a hundred of companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions. However, some of the major companies and organizations are also stepping up to combat the climate crisis. Apple, Microsoft, Johnson & Johnson, Tesla, Unilever, and Beyond Meat are some of the major companies that are committed to reducing their carbon footprints in their significant industries.

Apple is committed to an entirely carbon-neutral sustainable manufacturing office. Microsoft aims to eliminate its carbon footprint by 2025 and become carbon negative by 2030. Tesla prevents tons of carbon from entering the atmosphere with electric cars.

Meanwhile, in our country, they aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by 2030. Large companies such as BDO, SM Investments Corporation, San Miguel Corporation, and many others are set to reduce their carbon emissions. They will work together to achieve this lofty goal of lowering carbon emissions in the coming years. The Banco De Oro (BDO) is set to help save 93,000 tons of carbon emissions this year and contribute to the country’s target of reducing carbon emissions by 70% by 2030. BDO Sustainable finance is leading renewable energy development in the country.

All these major companies are taking the step to lessen their carbon footprints, and shift to renewable sources of energy.

Now, it is time that we as individuals do our part.

What can we do, as humans to save Earth?

Preventing climate crises needs collective action from both individuals and the government. It is our social responsibility to take care of our habitat as stewards of nature. There are several organizations that pursue the vision to safeguard the environment and natural resources.

Saving the environment starts with us. Conserve water. Practice the 3Rs: Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Try recycling and reusing materials. Convert your trash into some worthy things you can think of. Turn the plastic bottles into a pot, or whatever idea you have in mind. Reuse the plastic bags you’ve brought from the store. Practice saving energy. Walk instead of driving across a km street. Turn off the fan if no one is using it. And many more things we can practice to lessen our own carbon emissions.

Fighting this climate crisis equates to people changing their lifestyles. And changing our lifestyles means revolution. We need a revolution to bring back the beauty of our biodiversity.

And as we are the problem, we can also be the solution. No matter how small it is, if we aim collectively toward the same goal. There is no doubt that it will create an enormous impact on society.

Nature has had enough of providing for our relentless caprices, and it is time to restore what we have destroyed. Act Now.
