Beauty Tip: Why do Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning includes delicately shaving the skin’s surface with a scalpel blade, as described by Dr. Loretta Ciraldo MD, FAAD. This was from an article from Women’s Health Magazine. Furthermore, it is a form of exfoliation—removing layers of dead cells.
Now, the question lingers: Why do dermaplaning? Although there are various exfoliation products are readily available. It’s important to note, that while our skin naturally sheds dead cells, it may not remove them all, as highlighted by Rodan K. et al. That’s why it’s important to also exfoliate our skin using products. And for this article, we can do this with the use of a shaver.
Beauty Tip: Why do Dermaplaning?
1. It enables a smoother makeup application
Of course, as a beauty enthusiast, I’ve tried doing this because it’s known to help keep the skin’s surface smooth. Particularly when it comes to makeup application, performing this procedure the day before can result in a flawless skin appearance.
I can confidently attest to this, as I’ve received compliments on my skin and how natural my foundation appears in person!
2. It makes your skincare more effective
In addition to achieving a flawless appearance, dermaplaning is also purported to enhance the effectiveness of your skincare products. This is because removing peach fuzz and debris allows products to penetrate deeper into the skin.
As I’ve written in our previous beauty tips, exfoliation is essential for removing dead skin cells. Dermaplaning, then, offers a gentle alternative to traditional exfoliation methods. When performed properly, this procedure should not be harsh on the skin. Therefore, a blade should be used cautiously to prevent any cuts.
3. It can make the skin have a glowing complexion
After removing a layer of dead skin, my face appeared noticeably more radiant and healthy. Additionally, building on the previous benefit, my skincare products were more effective, improving my skin’s condition, all thanks to the clear and smooth skin surface.
The day after shaving my face, I noticed a healthier complexion. Additionally, it’s important to emphasize that having peach fuzz is completely normal. Facial hair is a natural occurrence, and there’s no reason to feel ashamed about it. However, I just shave my face to reveal a fresher, healthier layer of skin by removing the dead skin cells. After doing this for months, I’ve seen how my face’s skin improved.
So far, these have been the benefits of dermaplaning for me. Therefore, how can we do it ourselves?
Before anything else, it’s crucial to ensure that your face is free from acne or pimples. Performing dermaplaning on skin with these conditions could potentially worsen the skin condition, as the blade may spread bacteria, leading to further flare-ups. (Healthline)
However, I can suggest trying it out if you don’t have this issue. Many individuals actually opt for this, and it’s generally approved by dermatologists as well.
I’ve observed individuals like Pau Del Rio who used this technique. She demonstrated her ways using her Paulash Beauty Blade. In dermaplaning, here are the things you can do:
- Start with a clean and newly washed face using your favorite facial cleanser.
- Dry your face and make sure that your shaver is clean and sharp.
- Apply your favorite gel onto your skin so the shaver can glide smoothly.
- Start shaving your face, you can start from your cheeks; do this by section.
- Only apply gentle pressure to avoid cutting your skin.
- Wipe off the hairs on a clean cloth or tissue each time.
- After shaving, gently wipe your face using a cloth or tissue to remove any residue.
- Lastly, apply your favorite moisturizer so your skin won’t dry out after shaving.
Moreover, it’s also important not to touch your face for the whole 24 hours so your skin stays clean.
I adapted these methods from others’ techniques after looking for the correct way to perform them. Before trying this exfoliation technique, I wanted to ensure that this is dermatologically safe. And therefore, even Dra. Vicki Belo approves of this.
Dermaplaning is just another way of exfoliating our faces, and with that, it’s important to know that we can only do this once a month as it can irritate the skin. So it’s best to do this with care and caution. And remember to always care for your skin, because doing so can work wonders for us!
