What (Really) Happens When Writers Write
When people hear the word ‘writer,’ they would immediately think ‘creative.’ Probably, smart or witty, too. One thing is for sure though, when we write, we are never just writing. As a self-proclaimed writer, harnessing hundreds of words and sewing them into a piece of text that should make sense is my guilty pleasure.
So if you are wondering what actually happens when writers like me write, I will list it down for you.
Writing is My Release
Personally, writing is how I vent. Regardless of the topic, I have found a certain therapeutic feeling in the process of writing that grounds my soul.
The fact that I bleed words into immortality gives me a level of satisfaction or pride that I only feel whenever I write. For some, writing is a hobby. But for me, writing is my escape.
Writers Acquire Power
Whenever I write, I sometimes forget that I have this certain responsibility. When a mere person is given the chance to write, they acquire a power that should be wielded wisely. As a writer, the freedom that I got from a pen and a piece of paper is an immense one.
It has the power to influence good and bad decisions. It can define communities and cultures. Moreover, it can dictate what generations should believe in. Most especially, it can eradicate futures. There are times that I forget, but once it comes back to me, the intensity of this responsibility actually overwhelms me.
It Provides Comfort
In the same way that writing gives me comfort, is the same way it gives readers one. Words, even those void of actions, sometimes do the job.
If you know which words to use and convey to another person, what you will write can eventually ease some people’s burden. It can make them feel seen, heard, and recognized. Most of the time, that is what people look for when they read: empathy.
They Create Spaces
This is the reason why I write. As a communication major, I believe that when you get people to start talking about something, that usually signals change. And change, in this current political climate, is what we are all craving for. W
hen a writer writes, we build doors and windows to a space where individuals can discuss things that are relevant and important to them. In my opinion, this is why the world needs writers.
There are a lot of agendas why writers write, but as how I see it, these are some of the reasons why. I hope I was able to tickle your imagination and provide a glimpse of the complexity of the process of writing.
Aside from being a self-proclaimed caffeine-dependent person, Franchesca believes that she is a writer too. Because of her desire to escape mundanity, most of her time is spent in her bed watching TV series or her nose in a book. Additionally, she can be found wandering the streets, museums, and theaters of Manila. When asked about her philosophy in life, she will answer, “God is a woman, and my lola is the proof!”
