Pop Queer Icons of the 2020s
When it comes to the genre of Pop, we’ve had many legends since then who are proudly queer. They have used their platform of music to advocate for the LGBTQIA+ Community. From Elton John, Madonna, and up to Freddie Mercury. They have acquired a space in the industry for queer people.
But the long line of legacy did not stop there. This generation, a new line of Pop Queer Icons has continued to raise awareness through their own art form of music. These artists have had the courage to express themselves without being bothered by hate and bigotry.

Rina Sawayama
Rina Sawayama is a Japanese-British singer and songwriter. She came out as a Pansexual and she is proud of her own identity. Through her art form of music, she has always shown the representation of queer communities. In addition, be sure to check out her acting debut when she’ll soon takes part in John Wick: Chapter 4.
Janelle Monáe
Janelle Monáe is an award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer. She also showed her artistry as an actress in movies such as Antebellum, Moonlight, and Glass Onion. Monáe opened up as a Pansexual during an interview with Rolling Stone in 2018, and now she is openly Non-Binary.
Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X became a worldwide sensation with his smash hit Old Town Road. Later on, he featured Billy Ray Cyrus on another version of this song. He achieved history as the song had the longest run on top of the US Charts with 19 weeks. As a gay artist, he continues to advocate for the community. He wants queer people to say what they want through their artistry, without shame or fear of being judged.
Sam Smith
Being an openly Non-Binary and Genderqueer artist, Sam Smith has achieved success in their career. They even won four Grammy Awards, as well as an Oscar during their run in the industry. With Sam Smith’s latest releases, they always put into their work the beauty of our own bodies and being queer.
Kim Petras
Kim Petras is one of the new, up-and-coming artists of this generation. She is proud of her identity as a trans woman and she advocates for the community through her artistry. She is also the first trans woman to ever win a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Talk about history.
