Confirmed COVID-19 cases hit 1 million mark worldwide

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a pandemic that affected more than 175 countries, has recorded more than one million confirmed cases according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University. Meanwhile, death toll surpassed 53,000 while about 210,000 patients recovered, recording a 5% fatality rate and 20% recovery rate globally.

For the record, the one million mark was reached after a doubling in cases over the past week.

Cases worldwide

According to Worldometer, the United States has the most number of cases of more than 244,000 cases and 6,070 deaths. This is roughly 20% of infections globally. Italy, Spain and Germany follow.

“Our country is in the midst of a great national trial, unlike any we have ever faced before. We’re at war with a deadly virus. Success in this fight will require the full absolute measure of our collective strength, love, and devotion,” US President Donald Trump in his statement.

Just three months after the birth of this pandemic that started in Wuhan, China, the number of cases increases exponentially everyday. In fact, it disrupted the daily lives of millions of people after a number of countries opt for lockdown measures to contain the spread of the said virus.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines

In the Philippines, the total number of confirmed cases now reached 2, 633, 51 recovered patients, and 107 deaths. The government is planning to start the mass testing of COVID-19 PUIs and PUMs on April 14, 2020.

Prior to that, Philippines’ President Rodrigo Duterte had a press conference to address the nation about the government’s efforts to curb the spread of the coronavirus. In his speech, he warned people they could be shot dead if they caused trouble over restrictions. He, then, explained that the police and the military had the authority to shoot if their lives were in danger.
