Chris Evans aims to combat fake news through videos
Despite the numerous efforts of some platforms to fight misinformation, the problem still continues. If Captain America is fighting villains with superpowers, then his real-life counterpart is battling fake news!
To encourage political discussions based on facts
Chris Evans recently has started a civic engagement platform to give American citizens a channel to communicate with their public officials. Basically, A Starting Point or ASP is a platform based on videos to create a “more informed electorate”.
During a virtual press conference, he said, “It was born out of recognizing that we were living in this proliferation of misinformation—that it’s really hard to have a political discussion with people because most people come into the table with their own set of facts and information.”
Evans added that people should have at least an understanding of who the people in the office are and what they believe in. The best way to that according to him is to get the information from the officials themselves. He began the project together with fellow American actor Mark Kassen and technology entrepreneur Joe Kiani.
Even though Evans has chosen video as the medium for ASP, Captain America encouraged others to “read more”. He believes that people must be aware of currents events and historical facts. He explained, “I think that it’s easy for us to think that all the issues we’re going through as a country and as a world really is somehow unique to this moment when the truth is when you read history you realize that a lot of these things tend to repeat. And [by reading] you can get a lot of information to address not just what’s going on but it also opens up your understanding and compassion.”
It’s really inspiring how a big celebrity like Chris Evans uses his influence to do something for the benefit of the people in general. We hope that Filipino celebrities can do the same here so we can finally put a stop to fake news.
