Bb. Joyce Bernal: The Ultimate Creator

Bb. Joyce Bernal teh ultimate creator

I bet the majority of us have seen or heard of Bb. Joyce Bernal and her famous films. Isn’t her name somewhat familiar to us with the handful of movies she has created? Being one of the most successful Filipino directors of all time, Bernal could and should be referred to as the Ultimate Creator for her creative and innovative directing style.

Bb. Joyce Bernal: The Ultimate Creator

As soon as she picks up a story, the art flows and soon becomes a journey. Art is something that we all have, but some artistic filmmakers incorporate something out of a pictograph. They renounced beauty, cinematic technique, and music in their films, all the while tackling extraordinary themes. Bb. Joyce Bernal defies the conventions of linear storytelling, emotions, and articulating thoughts through visual and auditory stimuli.

Her streak of accomplishments

I remember watching Filipino movie channels with my family when I was younger. Unlike today, the internet and gadgets are all the rage. I can hear the voiceover whenever Bb. Joyce Bernal is credited with directing these films. No wonder I can still recall her name in my memory and actually have the ability to write about her now!

Bernal is a Filipino filmmaker and blockbuster television director, best known for being one of the most successful female directors in the Philippines. Joyce has directed a handful of films, and television shows, and even directed a music video–making her one of the most prolific directors in the country. She was also nominated multiple times for Best Director at the FAMAS Award, the highest award given by the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences.

Her films have earned numerous awards and nominations at the Metro Manila Film Festival, the Gawad Urian Awards, the Young Critics Circle Film Desk, and the Luna Awards. She is best known for her work on 10,000 Hours, which won her the Best Director award at the Metro Manila Film Festival.

Long-lasting friendships in the industry

She is not only a blockbuster director but also a producer, having founded Spring Films with long-time friend actor Piolo Pascual and Cornerstone Entertainment President Erickson Raymundo. In an interview, she quickly debunked rumors that she had been dating Piolo Pascual, whereas her Instagram posts were filled with images of “Papa Pi.”

Her Most Notable Projects

Mr. Suave (2003)

Heads turned here, heads turned there, Rico Suave is the ultimate womanizer, oh yes, I swear. In the bayside market where he works, there he gives out the “Suave” tips to his hungry friends with his quirks.

Rico Smooth is a definitive women’s man – or so it appears. His hidden issue: His entire body freezes when he is intimate with a girl. I laughed and thought it was kind of absurd at times when watching this film. It is completely insensitive, but Bernal manages to balance it sufficiently with humor and absurdity to carry it on.

Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kiyeme (2009)
Kimmy Dora: Kambal Sa Kiyeme (2012)

Twinners are Winners. Two is better than one, but this isn’t the case with Kimmy and Dora which makes it exciting and fun. Kimmy with brains, Dora with the sweetness, with two of these people combined the scenes are definitely breathless–from laughter.

I think you can agree with me when I say this is one of Joyce Bernal’s ever so famous films. People raged to watch both these films wanting to know more about the identical twin sisters Kimmy and Dora Go Dong Hae could not be more different from one another. As the twins become rivals in life and in love, life becomes even more complicated. And hello, Eugene Domingo… slay!!

Bakit Hindi Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo? (2013)

Oh, the sense of attachment to someone you admire, the beat of your heart can run for a mile. What would you do for your crush to be yours? Be on the lookout for his heart with the hope everything is on course. Love is a powerful emotion, so be ready for a ride with this story’s version.

Bakit Hindi Ka Crush Ng Crush Mo? is a 2013 Filipino film adaptation of Ramon Bautista’s self-help book. It tells the story of a smart, ugly duckling girl’s transformation into a person worth loving. It is the debut film starring Kim Chiu and Xian Lim–which made me squeal and laugh when I was watching this years ago. Of course, Joyce Bernal is in charge of the film’s direction, and I applaud her skills.

10,000 Hours (2013)

Risk for your life, the risk for the people. Serving the country and the community is what politicians should do. Sen. Gabriel Alcaraz prepares a privileged speech revealing details of a corruption scam at the highest levels of the government, implicating the President himself. How cool is this action film that is sprinkled with a “what if” true event in the government agency?

Joyce E. Bernal co-edited and directed the 2013 action thriller 10,000 Hours, which was made in the Philippines. The role of a Philippine senator who is forced to flee is played by Robin Padilla, and the fact that he is a real senator is kind of funny (lol). As an official entry for the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival, Viva Films released the film on December 25, 2013, and it won 14 awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Miss Granny (2018)

“Yesterday is a History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, but Today is a gift.” You can’t deal with life and have a shortcut from the hardships. The past could be youthful, but the present could be a handful. Miss Granny had the opportunity to experience this at the same time, now how is that possible? Living life as a double?

“Miss Granny” is based on the blockbuster South Korean film released in 2014. It won several prestigious awards and has been widely adapted in China, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Germany, and other countries. Bb. A strong lineup of stars, including Multimedia Prince James Reid and Kapamilya Heartthrob Xian Lim, complements Joyce Bernal’s own take on Miss Granny.

Her films have earned her multiple awards, including the Best Director award at the 2006 Metro Manila Film Festival.

She has also directed various television series on multiple TV networks, including ABS-CBN’s famous series Maalaala Mo Kaya, Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw, and Star Magic Presents: Deal or No Deal. She has also directed episodes of GMA Network’s I Heart You, Pare!, Dyesebel, MariMar, and Stairway to Heaven. Bernal also held projects in TV5 including, Kapitan Awesome, BFGF, and Babaeng Hampaslupa.

An inspiration for filmmakers and directors in the making

Bernal is downright an inspiration; how can you not give that a mention? The process and deliberation show the ending outputs of her production. The film business is challenging, with plenty of minds down to go through the piercing. It’s difficult to enter and difficult to remain, Joyce is someone up in her own reign.

There are many different paths that filmmakers can take in order to make their dreams come true. While others begin their careers as actors or cinematographers, others begin their careers as directors and producers. In 1994, Bernal began working for Viva Films as an editor before moving on to direct or produce films.

She continues to serve as an inspiration to aspiring filmmakers and a stepping stone for future generations of Filipino filmmakers. There will be obstacles in your path no matter what, but if you are passionate about filmmaking, you will find a way to make it work!
