Using baking soda to whiten remains fairly simple. The most straightforward way to add baking soda to one’s oral hygiene would be using it as a toothpaste topper. Although a lot of us already brush with a whitening formula toothpaste, anyone can harness the added whitening power of baking soda by putting it on top of your toothpaste to scrub away stains that are stuck on your teeth. 

You can pour a small amount of baking soda into a shallow bowl or dish. After you’ve applied a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to a soft bristle toothbrush, roll the toothpaste in baking soda to coat in the fine powder, then brush as usual. This, then, acts as a secondary cleaning and whitening to break down stains and clean your teeth. Aside from that, you can also look for toothpaste formulated with baking soda as an active ingredient. 

Coconut oil

Coconut oil has a lot of benefits when it comes to using them holistically. But, the use of coconut oil to whiten teeth revolves around an alternative medical practice called oil pulling. This refers to an edible oil swishing around the mouth for a period of time and then spit out, similar to mouthwash. This originates from an ancient Indian medical system called Ayurvedic medicine, relying on a natural and holistic approach to physical and mental health. 

Ayurveda uses coconut oil to oil all the tissues in the body. Hard evidence points toward the benefits of this practice are hard to come by, some studies conclude there are antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory advantages. Some people who perform oil pulling on their teeth involve swishing the oil in the mouth for about twenty minutes. Although there is no harm in doing so, some of these people report that it results in feeling nauseous.

However, if you experience nausea, maybe consider doing the oil pulling for only five minutes instead of the normally-recommended twenty. Aside from whitening teeth, it also helps out reduce plaque, prevents gingivitis, and regulates bad breath. It also helps to heal cracked lips, eliminates bad breath, and reduces inflammation in the mouth. To whiten your teeth with coconut oil, you will have to make sure you swish it around and ensure that it touches all areas of your mouth — gums and teeth. But, do not gargle the oil.
