Tofu Dishes in 1, 2, 3

Many people have tried substituting pork or beef with other ingredients to minimize their consumption of red meat. One of those ingredients that they use is tofu. Some use jackfruit, lentils, chickpeas, and other plant-based items. However, tofu is the most accessible ingredient to buy on the market. Here are some tofu dishes you could cook for your tofu craving!

The famous tofu sisig

Tofu sisig is a famous dish at Max’s Restaurant. But don’t worry, you don’t have to go to Max’s to taste this dish. You only need tofu, mayonnaise, liquid seasoning, calamansi, and other aromatics and spices. Just fry the sliced bean curd and mix your other ingredients as they will serve as your sauce. You can add chili peppers for heat and a bit of condensed milk for a hint of sweetness. After frying your tofu, pour them into a bowl where your sauce is, and mix well.

This recipe is my go-to dish whenever I have tofu stored in the fridge. It can be your viand, or your snack and pulutan when having a little drink. Aside from the guilt-free goodness, this is less expensive than buying meat.

Fried chicken, but make it tofu.

If you want fried chicken but are skipping on meat for today, check the market for new blocks of bean curd because we’re making something that tastes just like chicken! You would need tofu, chicken bouillon, egg, flour, cornstarch, baking powder, hot water, and oil for this dish:

  1. Dissolve the cubes in hot water.
  2. Slice your tofu into medium cubes and place it in a bowl. Make sure that they do not overlap.
  3. Pour your chicken stock, submerging the blocks.

Use a spoon to press down the tofu, absorbing the broth carefully. This process is what will make your tofu taste like chicken.

Then mix the dry ingredients (flour) in a separate bowl. After marinating the blocks, drain them, and pour in your beaten eggs. After this step, dip the tofu in the flour mixture and fry it. You can use gravy or vinegar as your sauces. Cook this for your snack time or as a main course!

Tokwa’t Kangkong

If you have this protein-packed ingredient plus healthy kangkong, what more could you ask for? This next dish is saucier than those dishes that we have above. Again, you would need bean curd blocks, water spinach or kangkong, oyster sauce, soy sauce, onion and garlic, and cornstarch (optional). Fry your blocks of soy first before sautéing your aromatics. Once done with the frying, you can proceed with cooking this healthy dish. Just sauté and stir fry your kangkong. Add your soy sauce and oyster sauce, and flavor it according to taste.

You can add a bit of water to loosen the sauce. If you want a bit of a thick sauce, you can make a slurry. After that, toss in your tofu, and serve! This dish doesn’t cost much but is so flavorful and suitable for a balanced diet.

Tofu as an ingredient, there are many things you could make out of it, from appetizers to main course dishes and snacks. It’s not just healthy but also budget-friendly!
