How Cheese Became One of My Must-Have Foods
Lately, I have been watching Schitt’s Creek, a Canadian sitcom, and two of its scenes reminded me of cheese. The first scene shows Moira and David cooking enchiladas for dinner where they struggle to “fold in the cheese.” On the other hand, the other scene features David and Alexis sampling different kinds of cheese made by Heather.
The siblings went to the cheese curator’s farm because David wants to sell her artisan goat cheese at his store. Besides the fact that I love these scenes for their comedy, they also reminded me of my love for cheese.
Cheese: From a No-No to a Must-Have
Growing up, I am not a huge fan of cheese in my bread or food in general. I absolutely hate it because of the salty and greasy taste it leaves in my mouth. Honestly, I do not understand why people enjoy eating cheese or adding it to their food. However, despite my personal distaste for it, fate seems to have a cheesy plan for me. One time, I tried a dessert with cheese on it, and since then it has become a must-have.
Thus, here are the “hows” that made cheese one of my ultimate must-have foods.
Macaroni Fruit Salad
First of all, I meant macaroni fruit salad when I mentioned a particular “dessert” earlier. I tried this dessert before with added small cubes of cheese in it and I enjoyed it so much. Perhaps, we can say that macaroni fruit salad really turned cheese into something interesting for me. However, despite adding more flavor to the dessert, I still had doubts about this salty food during that time.
Meanwhile, after tasting countless macaroni fruit salads with cheese, I became obsessed with the whole combination. It came to a point where I either ask my parents to prepare it or I just make it myself. I swear, this dessert really changed my mind about that cute yellow salty, and greasy food. And, I know that you can obviously tell my mind changed because I used the word “cute.”
Ice Cream
No second thoughts, ice cream stays and will always be on the highest tier of my list of favorite desserts. As a matter of fact, I reward myself with ice cream whenever I achieve a goal, small or big. Moreover, I love ice cream because it gives me comfort and satisfaction that other desserts fail to make me feel. Hence, falling in love with cheese became a smooth and sweet situation that I never regretted being in.
Meanwhile, I do not remember exactly when, but I had tried cheese ice cream before. And, I consider it one of the best ice cream flavors because of the balance between sweetness and saltiness. Besides the salty flavor, I also love that cheese seems to add more creaminess to the ice cream. Oh my—I just love it!
Cheez Whiz Pimiento
I can still remember contemplating whether we should pick mayonnaise over cheese pimiento or vice versa at a grocery store. But before this goes on and on, I want you to know that my sister ended up paying for both. After all, the more spread, the more bread—and we love bread.
When Cheez Whiz introduced their pimiento product, it became clear to me what spread to get at the grocery. Fast forward, after trying it with a slice of toasted bread, my once sweet toast became “always cheesy toast.” Every morning I would spread the pimiento on my bread, toast it, and thank the Lord. Once again, that cute salty and greasy food proved itself a must-have—my must-have.
Cheese adds more flavor to my food. Yes, I used to hate it, but now I really appreciate how it brightens my mood. So, do you have a must-have food? Does it have a cheesy story behind it? Share it with us!
