Celebrity weddings are often associated with grandeur and ostentatious wealth display. Since we are so enamored with celebrities, we treat their weddings like the “happily ever after” of Disney princesses and princes. Seeing these stars live a fairytale makes us hope that perhaps one day, our own lives might be like theirs.
It’s been a while since we saw a magnificent celebrity nuptial. These days, celeb couples like their ceremonies small and intimate. For now, let’s look back at some of the most iconic celebrity weddings of all time.
Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles
The most famous royal wedding in history took place in St. Paul’s Cathedral on July 29, 1981. Around 750 million people worldwide watched the wedding’s television broadcast. Moreover, a crowd of 3,500 individuals attended the event, including notable visitors like Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II.
10,000 pearls were used to embellish Princess Diana’s dress, which also had a 25-foot train. The ensemble also included silk shoes crafted with 542 sequins and 132 matching pearls, as well as a traditional tiara from the 18th century. And of course, there was the ring of Princess Diana, which is thought to have cost over $40,000 at the time. It features a 12-carat sapphire stone surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds.
Later calculations put the overall cost of the wedding at $48 million, with security costs coming in at $600,000.
Kate Middleton and Prince William
Another iconic royal wedding under the British Monarchy is Kate and William’s wedding on April 29, 2011. Crown royals from all over the world, chiefs of state from the Commonwealth, and friends and family of the bride and groom, were among the ceremony’s close to 1,900 attendees. Wearing an ivory and white satin gazar Alexander McQueen ballgown, Kate Middleton went to the ceremony with her father in a vintage Rolls-Royce.
The bride wore a 1936-produced Cartier halo diamond tiara that was given to Queen Elizabeth by her mother. Princess William’s best man was his brother Prince Harry, and Catherine’s maid of honor was her sister Pippa. The royal family’s wedding band, made of traditional Welsh gold, was worn by Catherine. However, William disregards convention and chose not to wear a wedding band at all due to his dislike of jewelry.
The couple reportedly spent about two million dollars on the wedding itself and an enormous $33 million on security.
Victoria “Posh Spice” Adams and David Beckham
Ireland’s Luttrellstown Castle served as the wedding venue of choice for Victoria and David Beckham. It was estimated that the wedding cost the couple more than £750,000. For their fairytale wedding, the Beckhams chose a Robin Hood theme.
Moreover, Victoria Beckham dazzled in a gold and diamond East of Paris tiara, making it a wedding fit for royalty. Yet even with the wedding’s overall pomposity, there were only 29 guests present for the ceremony, making it incredibly intimate.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West
Kim and Kanye’s wedding in 2014 was truly a star-studded event, featuring performances by Lana Del Rey at a pre-wedding party in Paris and Andrea Bocelli at the actual ceremony. The couple hosted a party in Paris first before flying everyone to Italy. In Florence, Italy, the ceremony was witnessed by close to 200 family members and friends.
Kim and Kanye’s wedding cost about $2.8 million, according to high-end wedding planner Jinane Kafrouny via E online. The cost of the event’s Paris leg, lodging, and flights weren’t even included yet!
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas
With an engagement ring costing a massive $200,000, of course, it is expected that the wedding of Nick and Priyanka will be expensive as well. Two ceremonies, one for each of their respective cultures, were planned by Chopra and Jonas. Priyanka wished for an Indian ceremony that honors her heritage and culture, and Nick also wanted one that honors his Christian upbringing. Both of the ceremonies took place in Priyanka’s home country, India.
At their Christian wedding, the bride and groom both wore specially made Ralph Lauren clothing. With a 75-foot-long veil, Chopra wore a Ralph Lauren gown that was meticulously hand-beaded. She, however, chose to attend the Hindu wedding in a traditional red dress. According to reports, the couple spent over $500,000 on their lengthy and grandiose wedding festivities.
