Our attention span is the amount of time we can focus on a task without getting distracted. Distractibility occurs when our focus is uncontrollably drawn to another activity or sensation.

While everyone occasionally gets distracted, people with short attention spans frequently struggle to concentrate on tasks and discussions.

However, you can’t blame your mind for being naturally complex. Instead, you can upskill it to be more attentive and composed. Doing so will increase your productivity and enable you to complete your tasks more effectively.

Get rid of distractions

There are obvious things that keep your focus away. The first thing to do is to figure out what they are and then work on removing them gradually.

A clear distraction these days is our gadgets. Due to its efficiency, we can’t get rid of it. But we need to limit our screen time. 

Learn to avoid using unnecessary gadgets when doing a task. Once we get used to it, the absence of our gadgets won’t feel as overwhelming. It will help us finish our tasks on time.

You can become distracted by anything, no matter how small. It can be a mess or even dust on your table. Get rid of them to improve our ability to concentrate.

Stop multitasking

Some people enjoy and are accustomed to multitasking. While you might believe that multitasking enables you to complete more work, you should reflect if it works for you.

When you switch between tasks frequently, aside from the time lost in shifting your focus, you risk repeating some of the work you’ve done to figure out what’s next.

The best course of action is to focus and complete one task at a time.

Keep yourself engaged

If you struggle to pay attention in discussions like a boring meeting or class, you can ask questions and take notes.

By asking questions, you’re making yourself more attentive by focusing on the things you want to have clarification on. Also, taking notes demands your focus, especially on key information.

Not taking frequent short breaks is one of the factors that contribute to having a short attention span. According to studies, our brain is innately designed to recognize and react to change. This indicates that it stops responding when you continuously act for a very long time.

In an effort to accomplish more, we become worn out, have our attention diverted, and, worse yet, fail to accomplish anything.

Make sleep a priority
