Liza Soberano calls on the Senate to pass ‘End Child Rape’ Bill
Liza Soberano advocated for the Senate to pass the End Child Rape Bill last Wednesday, September 15.
The bill seeks to increase the age of statutory rape from below 12 years old to 16 years old.
The actress, an advocate for children’s welfare, posted a video message through her social media accounts.
An advocate for justice
She addressed the topic of Senate Bill 2332, also known as the End Child Rape Bill.
“Most perpetrators of child rape are the victims’ own neighbors, fathers, boyfriends, and uncles, according to the cases handled by women and children protection units,”
Moreover, Liza noted how raising the age of statutory rape will ease the victims in seeking justice for their cases.
“Raising the age of statutory rape will drastically make it easier for these victims to seek and attain justice. We call on the Philippine Senate to resume the deliberation of the End Child Rape Bill now,”
Statutory rape is a criminal act involving sexual contact with a person below the age of sexual consent.
In current times, the age of consent is 12 years old, meaning statutory rape covers only children below 11 years old.
The End Child Rape Bill has been endorsed for plenary debates last August by Senator Richard Gordon.
In the Senate, he is the chairperson of the committee on justice and human rights.
Advocacy work
Moreover, Liza’s video statement on the bill becomes her latest advocacy work for children’s welfare.
Since 2020, she has been using social media as a platform to discuss social issues in the Philippines.
The Kapamilya star has worked alongside women’s rights group Gabriela and the non-profit organization Save The Children, the latter naming her an ambassadress.
Thank you for using your voice on this matter, Liza! May the Senate continue the process to pass this bill.
End child rape now!
