Liza Soberano raises a question about gov’t support for poor families in PH

Filipino-American actress Liza Soberano has lamented what she calls a lack of government support for the poor in the middle of the pandemic. The IATF recently implemented many restrictions in the areas inside the NCR+ or the GCQ bubble. However, there are many Filipino workers who have to go out and take the risk because they do not have a choice.

Liza Soberano expressed concern over the situation of many Filipino workers

The actress posted a question on Twitter last Monday. After that, Liza Soberano made a comparison between the Philippines and the United States in terms of pandemic response. The U.S. is already planning to distribute its third wave of stimulus packages while the PH government announced that they can no longer give financial help.

The tweet read:

“My heart bleeds for all the people who cannot afford not to go out and work. They literally have to choose between dying of starvation or dying of Covid. Is our country really this poor to no be able to provide stimulus?? Genuine question lang po.”

“Is our country really this poor?”

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said that they could not afford to distribute financial aid to residents inside the GCQ bubble. Soberano emphasized that people cannot afford to stay in their houses if the government provides for their basic needs. She further added, “Madali lang naman po mag stay at home if everyone has food on the table and money to pay the bills.”

Last year, the Philippines had its own version of the stimulus package and that is the Social Amelioration Program (SAP). It was given during and after hard lockdowns in Luzon and other parts of the country. But then, many believe that the amount given is not enough to survive and pay the bills. Aside from this, Soberano also said that various services related to the COVID-19 are free in that first-world country. Meanwhile, middle-income earners have to pay for testing and vaccine here in the Philippines. The country is currently experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases because of the spread of the new variants.
