1. Group’s Name
The group’s name, NewJeans, is creatively crafted by associating a figure speech double entendre. It suggests that jeans are an iconic and never-ending piece of clothing. Utilizing this idea, the group wants to establish an enduring image for themselves. Moreover, the phrase new genes is a play on words in the group’s name. This alludes to the K-pop group ushering in a new age of pop music.
2. NewJeans’ Members
The group consists of five members, making the group a quintet. This includes Minji, Danielle, Haerin, Hanni, and Hyein.
Minji
Kim Minji is one of the vocalists and dancers of NewJeans. She was born in 2004 in Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do, South Korea. Moreover, this singer made a cameo in BTS’ Permission To Dance music video.
Danielle
Danielle Marsh is also one of the vocalists and dancers of the group. She was born and raised in Australia. In addition, this young girl is fluent in both English and Korean.
Haerin
Haerin, a 16-year-old, is also a dancer and vocalist of NewJeans. She was born in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Moreover, she made her first debut with NewJeans.
Hanni

Hyein
Hyein is the group’s youngest member. She is also one of the vocalists and dancers of NewJeans. Additionally, she was part of the children’s group USSO.GIRL, but she left the group in 2018.
3. History of NewJeans
Under the guidance of Min Hee-jin, the preparations for a new female group to debut under Big Hit Entertainment started as early as 2019. The group was supposed to debut in 2021 as a joint venture between Big Hit and Source Music. However, it was later delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, the project was transferred to Hybe’s recently launched independent label ADOR in late 2021. There, Min Hee-jin was named the company’s CEO. Consequently, between December 2021 and January 2022, the second round of international auditions pushed through. By March 2022, the group’s lineup was finally decided.
ADOR teased the debut of their new girl group on July 1, 2022. They published three animated films with the numbers 22, 7, and 22 on their social media platforms. Consequently, this stoked rumors that new material would be released on July 22.
On July 22, 2022, the group unexpectedly dropped the music video for their first single, Attention, without any advertising or lineup details.
4. Record Breaking
On August 1, the newly formed K-Pop girl group NewJeans released their self-titled mini-album. According to Hanteo (2022), NewJeans sold 262,815 copies on its first release day. Considering that they just debuted, this is an impressive number for any artist.
Furthermore, NewJeans surpassed the previous record-holder for the best-selling debut album released on its first day. The previous record generated 176,861 album sales on its first day. By comparing the numbers, it is clear that NewJeans has created a new record.
Additionally, NewJeans became the first debut album by a K-Pop girl group to sell more than 200,000 copies on its first day. Moreover, they also had the title of being the third debut album by a girl group with the most first-week sales on Hanteo.
