Ever been annoyed when you share your Netflix account with a friend, then next thing you know, there’s already an additional profile or you cannot already open your own? Or you’re watching the latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race then the screen will suddenly turn black and tell you that you cannot play the title anymore because your profile is open on another device? Well, don’t worry, because the new security of Netflix has got you covered.
Account verification needed
Some users have received notifications that ask them to verify if they share the same household with the account holder. Based on the sources, the displayed message states “If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.” After receiving the message, there will be a verification process wherein the user will receive a code that will be texted or emailed to be able to continue.
This feature will help users who don’t want the accounts they pay for every month be used by random people for free. It aims to prevent account stealing and, of course, that ex-fling or boyfriend you dumped after you found out that they are a Trump-supporter or a DDS, who is still using your account to watch that series Ginny & Georgia that shaded Taylor Swift.
Nevertheless, this first happened in Australia and we are not sure if it will be applied to all accounts around the Globe. Let’s pray it will be, for I know many “Netflix riders”.
“This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so,” a spokesperson of Netflix told the ABC.
Although, in 2016, the CEO of the streaming giant, Reed Hastings, spoke about this and said that it would be too hard to monitor all of the account sharing and it didn’t pose a big threat to them, so it wasn’t that much of a big concern.
But to prevent any distraction or hindrance while you are watching your favorite films, tv shows, and Netflix originals, I guess this should be a reminder to not steal anyone’s account and go pay for your own. Just sayin’.
