When things get overwhelming, what should I do?
Realistically, life does sometimes feel too much to handle. Life feels like an endless agenda. Some of us are coping with our hectic work schedules, others are juggling to balance work and school, and others are struggling to manage everything that needs to be done at home.
Why Am I Feeling Overwhelmed?
We understand that the pandemic has made our lives more difficult which causes things to get overwhelming. Someone who is overwhelmed experiences sudden, intense emotions; it strongly affects them, and managing the situation becomes challenging.
Nobody, however, wants to wake up every day feeling like everything is hard to deal with and out of their control. When you feel overwhelmed, keep in mind that there are steps you can take to regain control.
Here are some of the things you can do:
Embrace your emotions
Most likely, it won’t be helpful to ignore or deny that you’re overwhelmed. Instead, acknowledging your negative thoughts and attempting not to judge yourself for having them will likely help.
Accept that feeling of overwhelming is okay and learn that there are ways to help you.
Write it out
Spend some time thinking about what is causing you stress. When you don’t know what exactly you’re up to, everything seems more intimidating, right?
Another great way to alleviate those feelings is to write down everything you need to do, including your thoughts and emotions.
Control what you can control
There are some things we can never do in a day or we can never control, regardless of the circumstance.
After thinking and writing out the things that stress you out, determine what you can control and let go of the things you can’t. Or envision a time when you can take on those challenging tasks one at a time. Remember, we are humans and not robots who can do a lot of things at once.
Focus on what you’re doing right
There are times when we think about what we could have done the day before, but that only serves to discourage us. Learn to act the other way around.
Make the accomplishments you made yesterday, no matter how small, something you can be proud of.
This will encourage us and generate other positive thoughts in our minds.
Do something you enjoy
Go on a break! Don’t be too harsh on yourself. We sometimes simply need to reconnect with ourselves.
Do something you love and enjoy. You can play with your dogs, watch your favorite series, listen to your favorite music, or play video games.
Prioritize sleep
Sometimes when things get too much for us, we spend so much time thinking about them that sleep becomes less important.
It’s difficult to see things clearly when we are exhausted. When you don’t have the energy to do something, it becomes harder to bear.
Have a restful night’s sleep each day to make everything seem more manageable!
The bottom line is to always keep in mind that overwhelm happens to everyone. These feelings are temporary and will go away. There are also ways to relieve stress!
Once everything is calming down, you ought to be better equipped to deal with any situations you’re finding challenging.
