Unleash your story: Join PaperKat Books’ publishing event

Mark your calendars for November 16, 2024, as PaperKat Books presents its highly anticipated book publishing event, “How to Write a Book & Publish It” at the G/F East Wing in Estancia at Capitol Commons, Pasig City. Now in its second year, this whole-day affair celebrates literacy, creativity, and the power of intellectual property protection.

Unleash your story: Join PaperKat Books’ publishing event on November 16, 2024

Co-presented by HS Grafik Print, Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society (FILCOLS), and Kahel Press, the event aims to educate and inspire book lovers, aspiring authors, and Filipino creatives. With the theme “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” the event underscores the importance of collective effort in nurturing a vibrant literary community.

The day will kick off with a story reading session featuring children’s books published by Reel Books and Kahel Press, aligning with November’s National Family Literacy Month to encourage reading from a young age. FILCOLS will lead a discussion on the importance of copyright registration and protection, empowering authors to understand and assert their rights. Esteemed PaperKat Books authors, illustrators, and creative directors will share insights and techniques on crafting compelling narratives through a world-building and character-building panel discussion. Plus, the event will feature book launches and offer a wide range of books and merchandise for sale from partner publishers, guest authors, and brands. After all, November is also the National Novel Writing Month.

“In our event at Estancia last November 2023, it was evident that many authors are looking for informative events about book writing and publishing, especially at a time when predatory and scam publishers are prevalent in social media. That’s why this year, we’ve partnered with an organization that can help educate authors about copyright registration and protection; as well as with a fellow publisher that fosters the love of reading and writing from a young age,” says Kath C. Eustaquio-Derla, Head of Publishing at HS Grafik Print and founder of PaperKat Books and Reel Books.

In collaboration with the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights of the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (BCRR), authors can bring copies of their published works and apply them for copyright registration on the spot with the help of the BCRR team, who will guide the authors with the online forms. Their applications will be further reviewed in the next few days before they receive their Copyright Registration certificates via email. The FILCOLS team will also be available for copyright and publishing contract consultations the whole day.

“The Filipinas Copyright Licensing Society, Inc. (FILCOLS) is an association of authors, heirs of authors, and publishers. Our main aim is to support the Philippine book publishing industry by collecting remuneration from institutions for their reuse of copyright-protected works via large-scale reproduction of books, journals, and web articles. These copyright fees are then distributed to FILCOLS members so they are encouraged to produce more works,” says Alvin Buenaventura, FILCOLS Executive Director.

“Kahel Press serves as a platform to promote and further the advocacies of book creators on environmental protection, youth involvement, Philippine history and culture, diversity, and disability inclusion. It is the children’s book imprint of St. Matthew’s Publishing Corporation. It publishes picture books, guidebooks for young readers, and the Bayani Biographies, a biography series for the youth written by historians,” says Ruth Valorie “Wowie” Catabijan, St. Matthew’s Publishing Corporation’s business development manager, Kahel Press editor, and FILCOLS Board Member.
