Typical Comments in Filipino Family Reunions We Are Tired of Hearing

FILIPINO-FAM-REUNION-FI

Holidays are approaching fast. Suddenly you find yourself in a family reunion where relatives you have not seen before bombard you with personal questions and unsolicited advice.

Usually, the remarks are harmless enough for us to brush it off. But, sometimes we need to call out our relatives on their judgmental behavior. Here are the usual comments we are tired of hearing at a family reunion:

“Uy tumataba ka na!” “Kumakain ka pa ba?”

Every time we attend a get-together, it is almost impossible to greet anyone without mentioning their shape or size. While our relatives may not mean any harm, it does not make it okay. Saying we look better after gaining or losing weight is not the compliment we think it is.

“May jowa ka na ba?”

Asking whether you have a boyfriend or girlfriend is a question that can’t be missed. Even if we are dealing with our family, being privy to our relationship status can feel uncomfortable. May it be a teasing gesture, our love life should not be a source of entertainment or the next chismis.

“Walang pera diyan!”

Our family relatives constantly argue how they are concerned for our future because of the measly income that our profession will bring. How many times have we heard that there is no money in arts? Not only does this discourages creatives, but it is also insulting and disrespectful.

“Tignan mo si ano…”

Another thing that is impolite is comparing members of the family. There is nothing good from minding other people’s business and acting more invested in their lives.

Furthermore, being compared to someone else is a huge blow to one’s self-esteem. Whether it is about how well others do in school or how they are much better in general, comments like these can be annoying.

“Babae/Lalake ka ba talaga?”

Lastly, gender stereotyping is one of the actions that we should not tolerate. Just because a guy dresses up nice does not mean he is homosexual. Likewise, if a girl possesses masculine traits, it does not mean she is attracted to people of the same sex.

To avoid feelings of resentment between our family, let us learn to be more sensitive.
