How I Fell In Love With Crochet
During the pandemic, all I did was work. So, I definitely longed for another hobby that would put my mind off of the horrific things that had begun happening in the world. That’s when I fell into the rabbit hole of crocheting. Basically, a crochet is a needlework technique performed using a hook plus fiber or other similar material. Most typically, this material is yarn. However, you can also use fabric, wire, twine, or any other innovative material.
Crochet becomes trendy.
Typically, crochet projects are useful, attractive, or beneficial in some way. Popular projects include afghans, baby blankets, baby booties, scarves, hats, granny squares, shawls, purses, tote bags, and others. However, recently, people have become more creative when it comes to projects. Crochetiers began making trendy clothing. And, that’s what I’ve been doing.
How I Learned How To Crochet
Two words. YouTube videos. I learned how to do it by watching videos on YouTube. So, I bought balls of yarn, and crochet hooks, and followed after the people on YouTube videos. That’s when I started learning the stitch, measurements, and action abbreviations. The fact that no special talent is required to start crochet projects was what made me love it the most.
So, how did I fall in love with crocheting?
To be honest, I fell in love with it because of Liv Huffman. On June 16, 2020, she posted a TikTok video of herself making a knock-off version of Harry Styles’ JW Anderson cardigan. Since she didn’t have the facilities to buy the €1,535 cardigan, she did the same style in crochet with her mediocre (at the time) skills.

Because of her video, a lot of people have begun to replicate her idea — crocheting the world-famous Harry Styles cardigan. At the time, I didn’t have the patience to create an oversized cardigan because of how time-consuming it would be. So, I didn’t partake in the trend.
However, I did my first crochet project where I didn’t use a pattern. Like, at all.
Crochet patterns help crochetiers with their projects, especially with the stitching and the style they want to make. My first-ever project was a black and pink cowl-neck cropped top. I finished it on March 17, 2021. The fact that I didn’t use a pattern and just freehanded it was the most impressive part… for me, at least.
I just wanted to revel in the feeling of achievement that comes with finishing a crochet project, especially a freehanded one. So, I continued doing it. Then, around April 21, 2021, I finished another crochet top. It was a strapless crochet puffed top. I felt really proud of it.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to finish a lot of crochet projects due to the number of things that started going through my head. The first project I finished after a long time was a cropped asymmetrical sweater vest. I finished it around April 9, 2022. Just like the others, I freehanded this one, too.
Recently, I noticed that I’ve mostly been crocheting tops. So, I decided to make an A-line skirt. However, I have yet to finish it. Inspired by Monki’s crochet midi skirt in multi stripe, I’ve started this new project that I would love to finish before the month of August ends.

Despite not having that many projects, I still love crocheting. I love it so much that I even thought of selling freehand pieces online. However, I have yet to actually start it up. Hopefully, I can do the Harry Styles cardigan after this one. So, stay tuned.
