Going to a psychiatrist does not make anyone crazy
Mental health in the Philippines still has a stigma. Even in 2022, it remains a taboo subject for some.

Some people seem to believe that praying will cure one‘s mental condition. Seeing a shrink causes eyebrows to raise. And for a reminder, going to a psychiatrist does not make anyone crazy.
It is okay not to be okay
We can even refrain from using the word “crazy”. Many people are afraid or embarrassed to consult with a shrink. Society labels them as crazy or worst, insane. These words are far from what is real. Mental illnesses do exist. Mental health is as important as one’s physical health. And just like any other disorder, it needs medication, consultation, and treatment.
Personally, it took me years to summon the courage to have myself diagnosed. I used to have this constant worry that no one would believe me. There is this nagging feeling that if I tell them, they will just shrug their shoulders. In one situation, someone told me to just have stronger faith and pray.
What most people do not realize is that it is not about faith. It is more akin to any physical illness that must be treated. They do not realize how hard it is for anyone. It affects not only the body but also the mind. Others do not see how it burdens a person.
Visiting the doctor’s office for the first time can be nerve-racking. It is normal for you to feel anxious. You have come to get checked out. And, like any other doctor’s appointment, it is just a routine checkup.
There is nothing wrong with consulting a psychiatrist. It does not devalue you or anyone else. We go to see them for ourselves. We desire for change and healing. And that pretty much sums it up.
