TECH/REVIEW | TECNO POVA 7 Ultra 5G: On to the next level

If there’s one thing I’ve noticed about Generation Z, my generation, it’s that we don’t just want phones that work. We want devices that match our energy, something powerful enough to keep up with school, gaming, and the random moments. That’s exactly the vibe I got the moment I got the new TECNO POVA 7 Ultra 5G.

It’s part of the POVA 7 series, which TECNO claims is its most significant leap yet in performance and design—and honestly, after using it, I can tell they weren’t kidding. This phone feels like it was designed precisely for  the next wave of users who want futuristic aesthetics, smart AI features, and gaming performance without needing to sell a kidney.

The POVA 7 Ultra 5G, in particular, sits proudly at the top of the series with interstellar styling and serious flagship-like hardware. And after a week of gaming, shooting photos, binge-watching, and constantly hopping between apps, here’s what we have to say about the POVA 7 Ultra 5G in this edition of VP Tech.

Performance and Gaming

Let’s be real, most of us want a phone that can game at 120 FPS without stuttering like an overworked laptop. That’s where the MediaTek Dimensity 8350 Ultimate AI Processor flexes hard. Paired with 256GB storage and 24GB RAM (12GB extended), the TECNO POVA 7 Ultra 5G doesn’t just feel fast, it feels effortless.

I tested Mobile Legends: Bang Bang first, pushed everything to max, and just waited to see if it’s going to show some struggle, but it never came. The phone delivered a shockingly stable 120 FPS, and even the touch controls felt more accurate than what I’m used to. All thanks to TECNO’s Precise Touch Control, plus their Hyper Gaming Engine, which makes aiming, firing, and fast lateral movement feel smoother and more responsive.

One thing I always look out for is heat, but this device kept things cool thanks to a 12-layer Cooling Architecture and Smart Cooling Engine 2.0. Even after hours of gaming, the back felt warm—but never alarmingly hot. It honestly feels like having a flagship gaming experience at a more or less budget-friendly price.

Build and Design

In a sea of boring glossy rectangles, the TECNO POVA 7 Ultra 5G. looks like it came straight out of a sci-fi series. You get two color choices—Geek White and Geek Black—but both carry the same Interstellar Spaceship Design that TECNO hyped up. It has triangular geometry, a 3D spatial vibe, and this cool spliced optical pattern that shifts subtly under light. It’s futuristic without being loud—just clean, unique, and high-quality.

It’s surprisingly slim, too. At 8.87 mm and 201 g, it’s comfortable to hold even during long gaming sessions or doomscrolling at 2 a.m. The phone also has IP64 dust and water resistance, which honestly gives me peace of mind.

Status Light

But the coolest part? The 104-LED status light at the back. It has 30+ light effects and five different usage scenarios, including notifications, calls, charging, gaming, and even music rhythm sync. It’s extra, but the fun type of extra. If you love customizing things, this feels like having a built-in mood light.

The UI, by the way, runs on the new pure HiOS, and it’s surprisingly clean. No overwhelming bloat, no confusing shortcuts—just smooth, youthful, minimalist UI elements that don’t get in the way.

Display

The display alone makes this phone feel way more premium than its price tag. You get a 144Hz AMOLED panel with a super-bright 4500-nits peak brightness. This way, watching TikToks under sunlight is easy, while late-night Netflix bingeing in the dark shows how the colors pop without looking overly saturated.

With a 93.8 percent screen-to-body ratio, it also feels extremely immersive. Whether I’m gaming or watching anime, the full-screen experience stands out at this price level.

Battery

A massive 6000mAh battery powers this whole setup, and it shows. On a normal day—socials, emails, browsing, calls, and a few games—I easily ended with 30 to 40 percent still left.

But the best part is the charging. It comes with a 70W Ultra Charge and a 30W Wireless Fast Charge. It also has long-term durability built in, which TECNO claims to maintain over 80 percent battery health after 1,800 cycles, which is basically like saying this battery is ready for 4 years of daily use. That’s a huge deal for students or young workers who want something reliable, even in the long run.

Camera

The rear camera setup is headlined by a 108MP primary shooter, which delivered crisp, high-detail photos in daylight and surprisingly good night shots. The colors look natural—no excessive beauty filters unless you turn them on.

There’s also an 8MP ultra-wide lens for group photos and scenery, plus a 13MP front camera for selfies. The front cam is sharp enough for TikTok, IG Stories, or spontaneous vlogs. The 3x lossless zoom is handy too when you want close-ups without ruining quality.

It’s not trying to compete with premium flagship camera phones, but for everyday content and social media? It absolutely delivers.

Overall thoughts

After using the TECNO POVA 7 Ultra 5G, it’s clear this phone was built for our generation’s dynamic, fast-paced, a little chaotic, but always expressive lifestyle. It nails performance, design, gaming, display quality, and battery life without pretending to be a luxury phone. Instead, it focuses on giving real value where it matters.

For P16,999, you’re getting a device that feels like a flagship in many aspects but stays accessible for students, young professionals, and anyone who wants a futuristic-looking phone with insane performance.

If you want something unique, powerful, stylish, and genuinely fun to use, the POVA 7 Ultra 5G is a solid contender—and honestly, one of the most exciting mid-range phones I’ve tried recently.
