Set your alarms now! ‘Liway’ to stream on YouTube for free on March 18

Liway director Kip Oebanda announced the release of the film on YouTube this coming Friday, March 18.

The announcement was also posted on Liway’s official Facebook account with a video compilation of clips from the film.

Several netizens commented on Oebanda’s post, asking whether or not the film will only be available on YouTube for one day. The director simply replied “nope.”

Others thanked Oebanda for allowing audiences to watch the film for free on YouTube. He then jokingly responded to one of the comments, saying “Sakit sa bulsa hahaha but it’s time.”

Liway is a 2018 independent film tackling about the story of Dakip. He is a son of anti-Marcos dissidents who is growing up in a prison camp in the 80s. Set during the days of the dictatorship, the story follows Commander Liway’s attempt to shield Dakip from the harsh realities of life while telling the story of her life.

The film was initially screened during the 14th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. It bagged two awards: a special jury commendation and the audience choice award in the full-length feature film category.

The release of Liway is very timely and relevant in this age of historical revisionism and red-tagging of activists. As the election draws near, the possibility of having another dictatorial regime is in the works. The film serves as a reminder of the experiences of the Filipinos during the dictatorship.

In case you did not know, Liway is also based on a true story. Kip Oebanda managed to capture his childhood milieu and the essence of the Filipino narratives in the film.

Set your alarms now! Liway is a cinematic gem you cannot miss out on.
