Nothing But Jill is a go-to pastry shop for those who love anything pink and dainty!
In the Philippines, bread and pastries are not just for eating. They are a tradition. We Filipinos bread and pastries with our friends and loved ones. In fact, we bring them home as pasalubong or gifts during special occasions.
A baker turning her dream into reality during the pandemic
No one can resist just the mere sight of freshly-baked goodies. The delectable pastries from Nothing But Jill is the 100 percent example of this temptation.
As a baker by heart, Jill Del Rosario spent her weekends baking cupcakes, cakes, cookies. She always got amazed at the process of creating desserts from scratch. Her dream of working in a bakery started during the pandemic.
Staying in the house for so long gave her enough time to jumpstart her passion. In June 2020, she and her brother decided to launch Nothing But Jill. As for the name, it simply represents “pastries that are uniquely ours and are nothing but the best”.
Like any other start-up business, the pastry venture encountered a few bumps along the road. They experienced not being able to meet the demand on time. Jill recalled,
At first, it was just me and my mom working inside our kitchen, we started baking at home and it would take us the whole day just to serve roughly about 20 boxes.
Eventually, they started hiring and expanding their staff to be able to send the pastries earlier and on time. They also realized that it was about time to invest in a commissary. Today, Jill said that they can now cater 200-500 boxes daily.
Just by looking at their menu, we noticed that Nothing But Jill had a wide array of sweets, desserts, and pastries as well. This is a huge advantage since as a customer, I want to have a lot of options. I sometimes base it on my mood or cravings.
Getting a bite of deluxe sweets from Nothing But Jill
Luckily, we were able to try two of the shop’s best-selling items. Even though I’m from Cavite, the Lalamove driver was able to deliver the goodies in great shape.
In terms of packaging, I must say that it’s really on point. The pastries came in cute and dainty boxes in baby pink color. After all, part of any food experience is the visuals. Jill had carefully had taken branding into careful consideration. She said,
We wanted people to seek Nothing But Jill when they need comfort or gift something cute to their family and friends. We did this by showcasing a cute pink fresh look, in our logo, posts, boxes, and eventually in our store as well.
So we have two items to try: a box of cheese rolls and an assorted set of cannolis. Let’s start with the cheese rolls first. As a cheese-lover, I thought that all bread that incorporates cheese is equal. Boy, I was wrong.
This version from Nothing But Jill is on a whole other level in terms of flavor and texture. The bread is pillowy-soft, fluffy with a bit of sweet-sugary glaze outside. Upon bite, I got surprised that the creamy cheese filling has a hint of custard. So you see, this one is great even for those who are not fond of sweets.
As for the cannolis, I think that this is a great choice for those who are crazy about chocolates. To those who are not familiar, cannoli is an Italian pastry consisting of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creamy filling.
We found five variations inside the box and all of them are truly satisfying. The cannoli shells are perfectly tender and flaky, like a flake away in your mouth kind of texture. It somehow reminds me of croissants since there are a lot of layers that consist of this pastry.
Personally, I prefer the ones covered in confectionary sugar to the ones coated in white chocolate or milk chocolate. The light sweetness from the powdery sugar is a nice touch to the flaky crust. I should warn you that eating them can be messy so you might want to put them on a plate or napkin first.
The ricotta cannoli filling inside is simply rich and indulgent. I love that it’s lightly sweet. The little flecks of mini dark chocolate chips or chopped almonds enhance its satisfying flavor.
The owner said that they are working on expanding their menu and we are truly excited to test out their next new creations.
