Must Watch! Top 1990s Movies on Netflix
The 90s was one of the greatest decades of all time. They had great movies, timeless music, Michael Jordan, and the dictator is no longer on his thrown. That’s how it was described to me since I wasn’t born yet in that era.
It’s common to have generational bias so I took the time last weekend to watch on Netflix whatever this generation is proud of. All I can say is it sure exceeded my expectations.
Before we head on to the list, I’d like to give an honorable mention to other great movies that didn’t it to the cut: Heat, Saving Private Ryan, Batman Begins, and Dark Knight Rises.
Here are my top 5 movies of the 1990s available on Netflix.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Considered one of the greatest movies of all time along with the highest rating from IMDb. The story is about a man who was wrongly imprisoned and found hope and redemption despite his torturous life in Shawshank. The movie won 21 awards and 43 nominations. Starring Tim Robbins, and Morgan Freeman. Directed by Frank Darabont.
The Green Mile (1999)
From the director of The Shawshank Redemption. The story is about a gifted large man who was wrongly put on death row. With his kind personality and special gift, he influenced the lives of his fellow inmates and guards. The movie won 13 awards and 37 nominations. Starring Michael Clarke Duncan, and Tom Hanks.
Forrest Gump (1994)
The most awarded on this list with a lighter theme than the others. The story is about Forrest Gump. A good man with an IQ of 75. Forrest may have been involved in many historical events in America but all he cares for is his childhood sweetheart Jenny. The movie won 50 awards and 75 nominations. Starring Tom Hanks, and Robin Wright. Directed by Robert Zemeckis.
Se7en (1995)
If your taste is for a crime thriller with disturbing twists, then this is for you. The story is about a retiring cop on his last case with a rookie as his new partner to solve a gruesome series of murders of an individual who uses the seven deadly sins as his motive. The movie won 29 awards and 43 nominations. Starring Brad Pitt, and Morgan Freeman. Directed by David Fincher.
Fight Club (1999)
From the director of Se7en. If you want an allegorical movie with a mind-blowing twist, then I highly recommend this. The story follows an insomniac office employee who met a reckless soap maker and formed an underground fight club. The movie won 11 awards and 39 nominations. Starring Brad Pitt, and Edward Norton.
I hope you can take the time to watch these recommendations.
There are still other quality movies in the 90s but unfortunately, most of them are no longer or were never available on Netflix. It must be considered as well that the availability of some movies may vary from country to country and some unavailable ones can still return to the platform.
