Keeping it right with the body as told by Enzo Bonoan

When it comes to staying fit and healthy, Century Tuna Superbods 2020 candidate Enzo Bonoan said there’d be no excuses. With or without the quarantine, he is a firm believer that maintaining a healthy state improves one’s overall well-being.

A talk with Enzo Bonoan

In an exclusive interview with Village Pipol, he shared his fitness journey and how he wants others to be inspired by his story as well.
“When ECQ was announced, I immediately worked out an alternative plan with the help of my coach. I started training at home while making use of what I had in my apartment. Yes, it was possible for me to continue my training without any equipment but gradually, I invested in additions to what is now my home gym.”
Little by little, he built a fortress for his body right at the comfort of his home, with dynamic pieces of equipment such as resistance bands, a doorframe pull up bar, a skipping rope, a good running mask, and a pair of dumbbells to kick start his routines and cope with gym closures in the Metro.
“With these and with enough creativity & resourcefulness, I was able to stay active during this quarantine. Currently, I do strength training 4-5x/week while running about 30km/week.”
Even though he adjusted to the current situation, Enzo still face challenges. He noticed that even if he was still exercising, he still burns fewer calories per day because of the limited movement compared to his usual pre-quarantine lifestyle. Because of that, he opted to really watch his food intake so as to keep in shape.

“One thing about weight management is that it is 20% what you do with your body (exercise) and 80% what you put in it (nutrition). Even if I was still training, the fact of the matter is that I could never out-exercise a bad diet.”

When asked about what keeps his fuel running and remain motivated, Enzo is lucky to have a great support system around him that help him stay on track.
“I draw motivation from a lot of sources. When I first got started on my fitness journey, I was motivated by my older sister who successfully got to shed off a lot of weight.  My father also told me that if I exercised and ate right, I could clear my skin (I had a big acne problem growing up).”

Motivating people

Moreover, with his role as a transformation coach, he also draws his motivation from the people he really wants to inspire and those who look up to him. In the process of getting fit, he aims to show them that anything is possible and he could serve as that push for them to be healthier and happier.
Enzo stands by the power of communities which is why he took the initiative to put up a group called ‘Extra Rise MNL’ and an online community, ‘The Morning Club.’ These are safe spaces that allow people to find motivation, inspiration, and information.
“I believe that yes, it is possible to go through one’s fitness journey alone but I find that surrounding oneself with likeminded people who are cheering you on along the way really helps. Especially during these trying times, in our community, we stay strong not only for ourselves but for one another.”
In addition, he also gave out advice for those who want to start their own fitness journey today, even with the pandemic. No excuses.
“So my advice to anyone who wants to start living healthy is to not go through this alone. Seek support from a community, a friend, a coach. That way, fitness is made more enjoyable and therefore would make it easier to stick to in the long run.”
We’re proud of your gains, Enzo! And we only hope you get to inspire more each day.
