Jon Kent, the new Superman, comes out as bisexual in new issue, DC Comics reveals
DC Comics celebrated National Coming Out Day last Monday, October 11 by announcing the new Superman’s bisexuality.
In a statement on their official website, DC Comics announced how Jon Kent will come out as bisexual.
Known as the Superman of Earth and the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, Jon will have a male love interest in the latest issue of Superman: Son of Kal-El.
Falling for a reporter too!
The issue, to be released on November 9, features Jon sharing a romantic relationship with journalist Jay Nakamura.
DC Comics wrote,
“Just like his father before him, Jon Kent has fallen for a reporter. After initially striking up a friendship with reporter Jay Nakamura, he and Jon become romantically involved […]. Following a scene where Superman mentally and physically burns out from trying to save everyone that he can, Jay is there to care for the Man of Steel.”
Moreover, writer Tom Taylor explained how “everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes.”
He said,
“Superman’s symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.”
Another LGBTQ+ superhero
DC Comics Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee expressed proudness for the story written by Taylor.
“We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example. We can have Jon Kent exploring his identity in the comics as well as Jon Kent learning the secrets of his family on TV on Superman & Lois. They co-exist in their own worlds and times, and our fans get to enjoy both simultaneously.”
However, the new Superman is not the latest superhero to be part of the LGBTQ+ community.
Last August, the latest Robin, Tim Drake, of the Batman comics, came out as bisexual in Batman: Urban Legends.
Meanwhile, the coming out of the new Superman has been met with tons of support from fans of the comics.
