Hashtag Filtered: social media is just distorted reality, and you need to remind yourself that

Have you ever scrolled through your timeline, and you see that one post then all of a sudden, you’re jealous or pressured to have what others have? Well, we’ve all been there. Don’t worry because you just need a little reminder that social media is not real life and that maybe, some social media detox will help.

What you see on social media is not everything

You probably know that already, but it would not hurt to remind yourself that every once in a while. In this day and age, especially during this pandemic, we spend most of our time on social media every single day. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and repeat, just like clockwork. It is so easy to get pressured and be heavily influenced by what you see on your timeline, so here’s a news flash for you: one’s social media feed is meticulously curated and manipulated to show the things they only want you to see. Keep that in mind the next time you feel a pang of jealousy over a social media post.

It’s better to be more interesting IRL

Sure, being internet famous is cool, but is that a guarantee that you’re equally interesting in real life? People have different personalities depending on the environment they’re in or the people they’re with, and an online persona is another thing. How people present themselves online, aka their “brand”, is just a tiny portion of who they really are in real life. Isn’t better to have something more to offer offline?

You are fine just the way you are, so don’t let social media tell you otherwise

Although the world is becoming more diverse, and social media can be a helpful platform to promote self-love, there are times when it adds so much pressure in making you feel like you’re doing less than everybody else, and it gives you the urge to constantly do more and be more than what you can offer. There’s no need to be pressured just to fit in because we’re all unique individuals with completely different needs, and we can work on ourselves at our own pace, in our own ways. You do you!
