A Classic Story With a Twist: A Movie Review of ‘The Little Prince’
Every one of us has encountered, one way or another, the timeless story of the 1942 novel, Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince. Many adaptations were created for the book and this movie is a must-watch to fall in love with the story again.
Classic Story with a Twist
The story revolves around the classic story, with an intertwining of a modern storyline. There was a little girl and her mother, in their admissions audition for the prestigious Werth Academy. Because of pressure, her mother instructs the little girl about her life plan. The plan must be followed up until the last minute. That leaves the girl no time for other social acquaintances. But the girl became curious about their neighbor and visited him. The aviator then tells the little girl, stories about his encounter with the Little Prince in the Sahara. Soon, her studies were put aside as she continues to visit the aviator.
Themes
The movie never goes away from the central theme of the book, to continue the childlike curiosity. The little girl cooped up in her strict schedule, might have forgotten what it’s like to be a kid. This time, it is the little girl that needs to learn all of this, not the aviator. With the aviator and his stories, she finally realizes that there are more things in life than being tied to work. The movie also shows the pressure the parents instill in their children.
Visual Storytelling
It was also shown in the creative aspects of the film the struggles in the film. The story of the little girl is with CGI while the little prince and the aviator’s story is in stop-motion animation. This adds to the imagery the movie wants to portray. The monotonous colors of the modern day contrast the warm and bright colors of the aviator and the little prince’s narrative. The drawings from the book can also be seen in the movie. The paper cut-outs used in the stop motion are a very good tribute to the author himself. Being unique and simply detailed, the images are shown elegantly. The filmmaking captivates the book’s unparalleled picturesque narrative.
This movie is worth rewatching. The timeless stories of the book reflected the timeless lessons in the movie which all ages can enjoy and appreciate. And can make them see and realize what truly matters most in life.
